I just tried doing a search on the forum without being logged in and this is the Captcha image I was presented with

I'm with Rhys, what exactly is the problem with that captcha?

Users that are not logged in have to do the captcha, though it seems like overkill for searching. I'll see what I can do

I can't read the "word" on the left, it just looks like weird symbols. Maybe it has something to do with my screen display? Maybe Bonzo had that problem too?

Yeah that word looks funny to me too. You can always hit the reload button if you can't make out a word.

reCaptcha tends to make two word phrases that may not make sense but are grammatically correct. based on that premise, I'd deduce that the word is "their", making the phrase "their hearings"

I can't read that word on the left either, but all you have to do is hit the little button that looks like two arrows and it will present you with a new pair. You should be able to do this as often as necessary to get a pair you can read.
Of course, you could just log in and avoid it completely......

I was just pointing out it is a bit hard to read; the word on the left was the hardest and I also assumed it was "their".
It is OK for us to guess but somebody with worse eyesight or somebody whos native laungage is not english may have a problem.
This was also my second version as the first one I entered failed; I think it had a - on the end of the word which I thought was part of the wavey line through the word.
There is also the option to hear the words by pressing the speaker icon which I did not try.

Honestly, it's supposed to be hard to read. The idea is to make it harder for bots to use image scanning algorithms to decipher the code thereby bypassing the security. In some cases they are too hard and that why they provide the option to cycle the image or have it spoken.
It's normally used for account creation to prevent spamming the boards. I haven't given a great deal of thought as to why such steps are necessary on a board search other than making it an incentive to register....
