View Full Version : Shooting in the rain!
I've always wanted to do a photoshoot in the rain and today I have an opportunity to. Its not heavy rain.. Id say a 4/10. I'm pretty sure I can just throw some ziplock bags on my speedlights to keep them covered and I've been trying to think of ways to cover my camera and lens with maybe clear kitchen wrap? Any ideas?

You can take a plastic bag and put a couple holes in it. One goes under the eye cup and the other under the lens hood. Or you could do the smart thing and find a spot to shoot where the model gets wet, but the photographer gets to stay dry. Maybe near a restaurant where they have an overhang and those nice outdoor heaters...yeah, that sounds pretty good.
Umbrella especially if you are using a tripod.
Personally I don't bother. I used to use plastic bags and all that stuff but it becomes a nuisance. I just use my camera and dry the outside later. Never had any evidence of water in the camera yet and it's been soaked at times.

Kiwi, you're such a daredevil! Then again I was out in the snow yesterday so the camera had the priviledge of getting wet and cold! lol
Thx for the advice.. Everything was going fine until we got booted by the cops.. freakin old people complained.

Where were you set up? What was there complaint?
Was set up in one of those walk through tunnels that go through hills and stuff. The complaint was the "type" of pictures we were taking. I know the guy who complained was this old guy who walked by who prolly thought we were making porn or something. The cop asked me for my permit to which i replied i dont have one. He goes well you need a permit to do commercial work, this is a public area. I said well im NOT doing commercial work. hes like still.. I wasnt gonna argue with him and make matters worst but sparing the details we were escorted out by 3 cops and our names taken down. No citations or anything.. They were pretty nice, just sucked we didnt get to finish.

A prudish society where you can't get your cans out in public.;)
I'm with Herc sounds like the sort of photo which I'd have to carefully examine - for moralities sake of course.
I don't like shooting in the rain, I've tried bags and umbrellas and it takes all the fun out of shooting and I don't like the wet blurry distant objects. But then that's me with landscapes - a wet model like you had might change my mind.
Wasnt sure if these would be considered NSFW so I'll just link it.

So we have somebody taking photos of a fully clothed female model in a subway (or tunnel) and another person who is paranoid who complains. It's a shame the cops feel the need to feed the paranoia rather than telling him he is a silly old duffer and to get a life.
Ya... They kept trying to imply that I was doing commercial work while I was packing up too... "So your a professional photographer?" after I repeatedly said I wasnt.. "So what are these for?".. "Why'd you pick this spot?".. Cuz I can. Ugh it was pretty retarded. I was waiting for them to tell me to delete the pictures lol. Cant go back there anymore which sucks because that was an awesome spot. Didnt get to finish but at least I got 21 good shots out of it which made the whole ordeal worth it.
You live in America for goodness sake. It's the home of the free and the land of the lawsuit.
Sue the duffer who complained because he has caused you pain and suffering.
Sue the local authority for not posting signs that explicitly ban photography in that location.
Sue the Police foe slandering you, they called you a Professional Photographer.
Sue the model because she delayed the shoot and caused the problems.
Sue the builder of the tunnel.
Sue McDonalds because every body else does.
Get a lawyer and get rich. It's the American way.

If someone having their picture taken is enough of a reason to call the cops he must call them all the time.

The amount of craziness over photography by hobbyists and pros has just continued to grow unfortunately, in the UK/USA its at its worst I believe, but even Australia has issues at times.
On the rain subject, i do use a 'rain jacket' per se for mine, but only because i already had one from my Lumix FZ20 which fits my D300 nicely and i dont have to worry about any non weather sealed lens issues.

While I can certainly can find the laughter in the notion of sueing everyone, as if it doesn't happen here in the US, I certainly hope you don't believe this is the American way.
As for the photos, yeah, they are a bit risque to be shooting in a public place. Obviously, if you saw that girl just walking around in public in those outfits, you would probably turn a head and ask the question, "what the hell is she doing with such little clothing on?" or "I wonder if she is wearing any panties under that mini-skirt?"
Now, add to the fact that someone is shooting photographs of the girl... yeah I can see it being misconstrued into what could be a "disturbance of the peace" or "indecent exposure" (pun intended...). Soon crowds could form, other people may want to take photos, etc... It could get out of hand if you aren't careful.
I think the next time you want to take photos of a girl in little clothing, its probably best to shoot in a studio, or at least find out what sort of laws there may be against taking photographs of scantily clad women in a public place.
True story.. According to the cops they werent worried about how she was dressed they were spazing out because I didnt have a permit. I was under the impression that we were taking private pics. Apparently my stuff is used commercially.. Thats news to me o_O
