ok so here are some 5d mk II samples from this weekend. they're all either shot ISO 3200 or 6400, but mostly 6400.

all shot full raw and converted and resized with lightroom. some have noise reduction applied through lightroom, mainly the darker ones. the bright pictures with even lighting were left as is.

1. my favorite of the night
sigma 30mm f/1.4 cropped
30mm @ ISO 3200 f/4 1/50s with flash bracket and 580ex set to 2nd curtain sync & lightsphere attached

as far as the 5d II is concerned, IMO it has to be the best wedding camera out there. the ISO 6400 capabilities are AMAZING! i didn't even try the 12,800 or 25,600. the autofocus is fine, definitely slower than my 40d, but not as bad as i'd expected from what people said. i'd say it's comparable to my 30d's autofocus..and i never had a problem with that. once it locks it's dead on. it fits great in my hand. the lcd is far better than anything i ever expected to see in a camera. on my 30d and 40d zoomed in all pictures look soft, on the 5d II you can definitely tell if they're sharp or not. other than that, everything else is just bonus.

Makes me wonder how years ago I ever shot weddings with mostly Kodak Portra 160 or Fuji Pro 160 film. Heavy with the flash I guess!!

Excellent work there Adam!! Certainly makes it tempting to get the credit card out.

The screen automatically brightens when exposed to bright light, and dims down in darker light.

Great shots there, and cute bride :)

no banding issue that i've noticed

yea she's really pretty. i also have some bridals of her i need to post.

i tried the video the day i got it, but haven't felt like processing it or even know the first thing to do with it. do you know if any sites will let you post it straight out of the camera? i suppose i could try premiere pro. i used to know what i was doing in that program.

Editing video on it works perfectly fine on 640x480. Currently only the Mac is able to edit the 1080p video. :(

From what I understand Finalcut pro on the Mac does it perfectly fine. It has to do with the way that the h.264 codec handling by Quicktime for Windows lacks hardware acceleration and multi-core processing while the Mac OS version of Quicktime is not crippled.

I just couldn't help it. It was there and it was fast and I had 21MP to play with.

And thanks rooz. I appreciate it.

#1 and 6 are fantastic Adam. Amazing how good those ISO 6400 shots look. And who says you can't use the Sigma 30 on FF?!

I wonder if you still need to sell your Sigma 30 1.4. It seems to be a lens made for you.

i do love that lens. been thinking about trying out the canon 35 f/2 since it's only $240. i think i can deal with f/2 if it's sharp enough. til then i think i'll just give myself room to crop and use the 30 because a battery grip is the first on my list.

other than that i'm thinking very seriously about selling the 17-55 and getting the 16-35 instead. i really seem to use the 17-55 at 17 the most and i can't remember the last time i used the 55 end.

A cheaper alternative would be the 17-40 since you can use the extra iso headroom to compensate for the 1 stop difference. I think I may go that route since 24 still doesn't feel wide enough for me.

Theres a good amount of distortion and vigneting on the 17-40+5D I, i would suspect the same for the 5d II, i love my 17-40, but i can't say i use it under 20 very often.

That's good to know... does the 16-35 not have the vignetting problem?

i didnt know that, interesting. i've only usd it on a 30d/40d and i loved it. i didnt realise that distortion and vignetting was ever an issue with it.

I've never minded the distortion or vignetting of the 17-40 on the 5D, its much less noticable than the 24-105, although my copy of the 24-105 is a bit sharper on the wide end.

17-40 on the 5D....

Hey i love my 17-40/5D.

But i was warned about these things before i bought them, and its stuff that can be adjusted and tweaked and compensated for.

Distortion is something you can easily work into a composition like his shots show, but its still there, if you look at the barn for example. Sometimes it can actually make the shot better, as for vignetting, its worse depending on your filter, but even then you can adjust it after on the computer.

Its just something that i was pleased to be warned about so i pass it on :o

I wouldn't know about the 16-35, sorry.

i just don't think i could trade an f/2.8 lens for an f/4 lens. you never know though, i could get the 17-40 and get a 50 1.4 for the same price and probably less.
