Gary Fong has picked off a nifty GPS device that may interest some. IT's a "standard" hot shoe design, so it may be difficult for SONY users to use, but what the heck?
CLICK HERE (http://garyfonginc.com/mailing20090208.html) for a look ... I do not know, I put it up to know what do you folks think about it?
Cool concept. I think something like that may appeal to a small group of photographers. Mainly those who do expeditions, deal with wild animals, etc.

Don, this has been out for a while (although I am not sure if it was under the JOBO brand). It is an interesting product, but I believe I read that it was not the best of these devices. Slow acquisition times and only minimal confirmation that it has a valid location. I thought about buying one of the other geo-taggers before a recent trip, but determined that most did not offer the right combination of battery life and fast acquisition times. If it isn't synched in a minute or less from an overnight shutdown, then do you want to wait to take your first photos? When you are traveling do you really want to manage another device?

I haven't been in a situation yet where I had to ask myself "where am I?". If you happen to see a device which answers the question "what am I doing here?", then please let me know.
I see how it works... Not much better than having a hand-held Garmin unit and writing the coordinates down onto a notepad. I'll pass on this one.
What it does is when you take a photo, the flash contacts trip, making the unit record when you took the photo and where. Then software combines the GPS data with the photos.
Downside - if you already have photos on the card or don't use the GPS continually, it all gets out of synch. Even the timestamp won't help because GPS devices use local time rather than the time from your camera or the time from the timezone you're in. For example, if I'm in Charleston and drive to Columbia, the time shown on my GPS will be relative to my position rather than set to EST or GMT +5.

Sony is soon to release their version that works via a timestamp. At least it has a small display to tell you it is working.

i found this a few weeks back on the UK site: http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/accy/gps/git_en.html
seems like the Alpha's already had a geotagging solution with an add-on but was just not to well publicized.
