I have just moved from a Minolta 7D to a Sony A700. I have 3 lenses which are supposed to be compatible (Sigma 170-500mm, Tamron AF ASPHERICAL XR Di LD (IF) 28-300mm 1:3.5-6.3 MACRO, Sigma 18-50mm 1:3.5-5.6 DC) which I have happily used for 2-4 years. For whatever reason, I do not get the same quality out of the A700. Anybody have any suggestions? Many thanks:)

I think you need to re-examine the method in your question. You just took a couple film glass lenses off a 6.1 MP sensor and placed it on a 12.2 MP sensor and are winding up with different results. The α700 is a definite improvement in your optical resolution ... and as such, uses more pixels to describe EVERYTHING it sees. Suddenly, things that looked "sharper" in the 7D ... aren't so sharp anymore. One solution is to use a better lens on the α700, one that can deliver a crisper image. The 28-300 is notorious for soft images. The 18-250 is the more worthwhile lens, on this camera. Click on THIS LINK (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42048) for some interesting analysis of several lenses, using the α700.
Apart from that, try and switch from "FINE" resolution to "X.FINE" and see if there is a noticeable shift in your image quality.
Investing in glass ... usually solves the problem. ;)
Please look down and join in on the SONY DSLR forum (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=47) (<- click on this link) for some more discussion along these and other lines. Your participation would be welcome.
It just makes no sense to shoot through a "Coke Bottle" bottom, as a lens.
