I have a Canon SD770 IS compact camera. Great camera. My wife and I are going to the French Open tennis tournament this spring, and I would like to ability to take some good pictures of the players. I think I would need a zoom greater than 3X that comes with my current camera. So, I am debating on getting a new camera.
I have narrowed my choice down to the Canon SX10 IS. It has a 20X zoom and is basically a point and shoot camera. The attractive this about this camera is obviously the price. The pictures that can be taken look pretty good, but not sure how it is for a sporting event.
My other choice is to get a Canon EOS Rebel XS and add the Canon EF-S 50-250 mm IS lens. The concerns I have is the price; is there an increased quality of pictures as compared to the Canon SX10 IS camera, especially in a sporting event; and what kind of restrictions are at sporting events on cameras. Will this lens work well to Zoom in on the action at a tennis tournament?
Does anyone have comments on these choices? How much difference would the image quality be? I am tempted to get the Rebel, thinking of future flexibility and image quality, but if I go the D-SLR route, I will have to justify the increase cost to my wife, as well as myself. The Canon SX10 IS does look like a nice camera that will cost me about half as much as the Rebel kit.
Thanks.
