I have an SD memory card with pictures on it that I'm trying to load onto my computer. There's a slot in the computer for the card, but when I insert it, nothing happens. What do I do?? Please help me out.

Unfortunately not all slots are created equal. In other words, unless you're sure it's for SD - you may have it in the wrong slot. I'm not familiar with your particular reader, but when you insert it, make sure it's inserted correctly and gets a snug fit - don't push it in too hard.

I'm also assuming you're on a PC, using windows (as most of the population is it seems). With that in mind, even your unplugged devices should show up in "My Computer" as removable media. My suggestion is to go into "My Computer", without it plugged in, and see if the device shows up. If it's showing up, then try to plug it in.

If it does not show up, then chances are it's disconnected. If the reader is built INTO the computer, then it's probably best you call your computer maker to find out what's the matter with it. if it is a card reader NOT BUILT into the computer, then chances are it's connected via USB. Just follow the cord to where it leads you, and make sure it's plugged in. If it is plugged into the USB, pull it out while windows is running. It's also handy to have your speakers up during this as windows should get a nice little bell sound. Plug it in again if you hear the bell, and it should recognize the device. If you hear nothing, after unplugging it, then plug it into another USB connection in the computer. Most computers come with multiple USB connectors, some in the front and some in the back, and sometimes on the keyboard. Try different ones and recheck what I was saying above to see if it shows up (in my computer, bell sound, etc).

Hopefully this helps - worst case is you may need to buy a reader from the store (6-1 readers work pretty well).

I'm not sure if this holds true for your computer, but on my external reader I can insert the SD card in the slot face up and face down. It fits fine either way, but one way is correct and one way obviously is wrong. If I insert it upside down nothing happens and of course if inserted right side up the PC recognizses the card as an external drive in the reader.

Some readers work better than that method. Unfortunately, the reader I have for my computer, like most external readers, are pretty much junk when it comes to insertion. In my particular reader, I need to insert upside down for it to work - weird eh? well it's not the only one I've seen like this, but I've seen much better readers built into computers.

I have had a SM reader. I have an SD reader and a CF reader. I dislike the all-in-one's. I find them plasticky and awkward to use.

I have no problems with my single media readers. The all-in-ones seem very vague when it comes to card insertion.

Ok, I'm using an hp pavilion f1503 PC with Windows XP. The computer has a built-in card reader specifically for SD cards (it's labeled). I tried inserting the card upside down but it won't fit. It slides in easily with the SD sticker facing upwards. I also noticed a little piece that slides up and down on the left side of the card. When its in the down position it's in "lock".

I've checked on My Computer when the card is in, out, locked, unlocked....and it doesn't make any difference. Nothing new shows up.

My camera is a Konica Minolta Dimage X31.

If anyone knows what to do, please help me out. Thanks!

Maybe you need to run the add hardware wizard - perhaps teh reader's not been found by the O/S. Check in device manager - perhaps delete the device and let the system reinstall it - if you have admin privilages.

Do you have any other portable memory devices active? The way my old laptop was set up at work, I could access either my PCMCIA CF card or my USB SD reader, but not both at the same time. I believe my IT people had set it up that only drive E: was available for portable memory devices. If my CF card was using drive E:, it wouldn't recognize my SD reader, and vice versa.

Could I know what brand is your computer? Very few of them come with card reader slots up front.

See post #6, it's an HP Pavilion.

I'd try the Add Hardware wizard as well. See what the computer currently recognizes as existing hardware.

Actually I recommend getting a proper card reader coz they're not too expensive and are tremendously useful.
