View Full Version : Dead pixels

Last night I was doing some long shutter speed night time shooting. Today while post processing them I noticed these bright spots that I though were crane lights. Ended up being Dead/Bad pixels. There are about 5-6 white ones, 2-4 red ones, one blue and one green. Most of them are visible at 50%. I am not worried about these pixels cause I hardly do long shutter speed shots in the first place plus 20spoiled pixels on a 10mp camera is not much to worry about (also I can photoshop them off). What I'm worried about is the pixels increasing. I've done 36K clicks on my camera and I plan to go for a 3 week vacation next month where I'm sure I'll be putting my camera through some crazy number of clicks (Read: 5K plus). Should I be worried, should I get it checked before the trip...any advice is welcome....
Btw I need this camera to survive till June.....

Should I be worried
No.
Get Pixelzap or use Lightroom to eliminate hot/dead/stuck pixels from your RAWs.

give us a sample.
the only time i'd be worried is if you noticed a trend that the dead pixels were increasing significantly. otherwise i dont think its anything to worry about at all.
btw: are long exposures and extreme sensitivities the only time you notice this or is it in every shot ?

Is it possible to do it in CS3???
give us a sample.
I copied the file to CS3 and the pixels are not as clear as they were in DPP...while some of them have completely vansihed....odd!!! Is that something to do with the format (Raw vs Jpeg)
Anyway I'll put up a sample in a few moments....
EDIT: opened the RAW file in CS3 and the pixels are gone!!!

ACR (the RAW engine behind Lightroom and Photoshop) kills hot/dead/stuck pixels automagically. That's why it's not something I care about anymore, unless I'm Jay-Peggin, which is extremely rare anymore.

Only night shots....even with a 1sec exposure...but they're not as clear as compared to a 7sec exposure...
I'm not worried now....just worried about the future...was wondering what the probability was of it getting worser...especially under harsh usage.....i.e vacation!!!

Ohk...thanks...so how do I then show a sample??? print screen??

Convert it with DPP. DPP doesn't kill 'em.
BTW...both my cameras pretty much look like a mine field in the hot/dead/stuck pixel department. But it's not a concern these days with Lightroom.

Sample...this does not even look close to a minefield...

My brand new 50D had 4 STUCK STUCK pixels (2 red, 2 blue) and I almost wantedd to send it back, but i just mapped them out and moved out. 4 out of 15 million isn't bad I guess.

for a new camera...I would get it fixed or replaced...especially if I'm spending that much $$$ on it...
but after 36K clicks...I think a few busted pixels is fine!!!

i wouldn't even have a clue if mine had any. been using lightroom since it came out. didn't even know it fixed that stuff automatically.
