Hi all, I am in the market for a small point and shoot camera for day to day use and that I can pick up an underwater casing for to use for diving.

For a while now I have been using my moms Rebel XTi and I really like it, but I simply dont want to spend the huge amount of money on the underwater casing for it, and I would like to get something a bit smaller i keep on me.

My main concern is a fast picture speed. Im not sure what the technical term is, but the time it takes form pressing the button to taking the picture. I have used ALOT of point and shoots that take anywhere from 1 to 4 seconds to actually take a picture after focusing and it is amazingly hard to take pictures underwater like that.

So pretty much any recommendations on a camera that can take fast pics, is more then 5 megapixels, can take a 8gig+ card and has some kind of underwater color correction would be great.

Canon has cases for some A series P&S cameras. The case is about $165 as I recall. Then you'll need the compatible camera.

The term you are looking for is Shutter Lag, and it's going to be a problem with any P&S underwater when you have little light. With any camera (besides a DSLR) you're going to have to deal with it. You will also need to look for a camera with a powerful flash to operate at any depth.

My friends who do really good underwater photography use a DSLR and a full setup.

yeah I know I will have a little shutter lag, but i would like to get as little as possible.

I plan to get a casing and strobe for the setup but that's about it. I used a friends cannon powershot with a casing a few years ago and it took some pretty good shots which is why im looking for something similar.

I would love to get a DSLR setup but I simply cant justify the cost with how little time I get to dive now.

went to the store to play with some of the camera's and im leaning toward a canon powershot SD1100 is. Seems to be a pretty good camera for what im looking for and has a few underwater housings available.

any input on the SD1100?

It's a fine little camera, a great deal right now. The waterproof case will cost more then the camera and you'll need a strobe as the flash isn't super strong.
