so the lady friend is buying me something for christmas and i dont want to be too greedy so i said dont spend more than $250 on me.

ive come to these options of choices

1.ipod classic 120gb
2.clothes, shoes, etc
and 3. of course some sort of gear to go with my camera.

i was thinking about getting a starving student kit from mpex for around $250, comes with the cactus triggers and a vivtar 285.

any other suggestions regarding gear for my d40?

thanks everyone :)

If youre going to put money towards a phone, get the Blackberry Storm, well more than $250, but since a phone was mentioned, I thought Id throw one out there:D

As for camera gear.. why not a gift card for B&H? That way, if there isnt anything you really need/want at the moment, you can file it away and use it towards a future purchase.

All jokes aside a decent tripod with a good ball head would be a very sensible and useful gift IMO.
Something like this (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/523155-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto__055XB_Tripod_Legs_Black_.html) fits the price range and will last virtually forever. I still use the tripod I was given for Christmas in 1983 and I can't count how many cameras I've had since then.

If you do go the tripod route get a quick release plate they make things so much easier.

Since you can't decide, dump the lady friend and send her my way.:D

Seriously, after you listing a vintage Vivatar 285 was going to suggest the Nikon SB-600 which I just bought yesterday. I see you already have it listed in your inventory. The tripod is a great suggestion. Another, looking at your inventory list, scratching my head over the lens overlap, but don't see any zoom range. Perhaps consider the Nikon 55-200VR which isn't a bad lens on a budget, or consider 3rd party.

you could contribute to a lens...You are lacking a zoom lens. You could get a sigma 50-150 or the highly acclaimed (by myself and others) 55-200mm VR lens. However the sigma is faster...there are also tamron equivalents (70-200)

You might be able to get $250 for the D40 used. $250 from the used D40 + $250 from lady friend = refurbished D80 from Cameta Auctions Ebay store with a warranty...

I bought myself an S-IPS LCD 20" monitor as an xmas present to myself today!

Would love a Tokina 11-16mm to add to my list, but will keep dreaming for now.

Heh. Yeah, the price is why I went the direction I did. Managed to get a hardly used refurbed by Dell 2007FP monitor for under $300. Checked before I bought it too to ensure what I was getting was indeed an S-IPS. These things are harder to find than a nun at a brothel :P

Great monitor.. I might have gone for that instead of the NEC, but as you know, its an IPS lottery with Dell. Congrats on your new "toy"!

Yeah, smart buy. I bet if you bought one now for $179 from Dell it would be a TN panel.
