Lets leave the traditional stuff for other places.
No men in red suits with children on their knee.
No trees with lights (unless they are from a non traditional perspective).
No houses decorated with a third world countries worth of lights.

Be different, be creative, use perspective, use DOF or creative lighting (this is a Nikon forum after all we should be able to do that), heck as a sop to Rooz even use macro is you can but lets have fun with this.

Hand-held (!), ISO-4000, f/2.8 - and yes, it's not terribly sharp, I know. But it made me feel really christmassy for a change. Even though Nürnberg is the city with one of the world's oldest and most famous Christmas markets, snow is awfully rare here. But last week, we got some. And on my way home (I live 200 m from that scene) I felt a real urge to take some shots.

Unfortunately, this winter wonderland lasted only for that evening.

I thought I recognized it. My wife and I made the trek to the Christmas Market while I was stationed in England. Put me off of "bus" tours for life (We don't smoke, among other reasons), but we enjoyed Nürnberg.

ISO-4000, like there's nothing easier in the world. That makes me so sick (OK, the real word is jealous). My D200 doesn't go there. Of course, for that scene, it just means, "Tripod required".

are Canon shooters allowed to enter or will I need to copy the idea and take it over to the other side...??

Of course they can.
If we can't be nice to fairies at Christmas the world would be a stranger place than it is. :D:D

I call this "the gunner" because that's what it looks like to me. It's a shot of some Xmas lights from precisely one year ago today.

Thanks Kiwi. I was taking a walk down to the shopping plaza, about a mile and half down the road. Got hit by fog a thick fog on the way out the door... so I turned back to grab my camera.

Nice effect dood.
How'd you do that? Was it a slow exposure with a quick manual zoom?

I don't have the original here at work so guessing the settings, all lights in the house off except the tree lights, 5 sec exposure, f11, iso 200. I framed the tree up at 18mm then zoomed in the lens to 105mm, tripped the shutter then zoomed out as quickly as I could smoothly then left it for the last 2 seconds exposing the whole tree.

I tried all sorts of things more wiggle, zooming slower, starting zoomed out then trying to beat the shutter when zooming in. This was the cleanest easy to see version, the others were cool looking but much more busy. Thanks for the compliments is means a lot to a noob like me. :o
