The POTD thread has now been running for just over two years and has over 8000 posts and remains popular.
I'm sure that there is nobody who would look through the thread from the beginning these days so I'm wondering if it's time to ask Jeff to lock the thread at the end of the year and then we start a new one called something like POTD 2009.
Ultimately it doesn't really make any difference but I just think that having a new thread each year might tidy things up a bit. The other thing I do not know about is whether the forum software has some sort of maximum post limit on a thread that we will run into one day.
What do other people think about this idea?

Am I the only one who thinks "let's see how far we can actually push the limits of the forum databse before it blows up"? We're at 8,150 replies and counting with 758,100 views. If we kept this going, we might be able to have a Guiness World Record or something. Just think: in 5 years, 30,000 replies and 3,750,000 views ;)

I guess im in the minority here. I dont see the need. If the current thread was a problem, I have no doubt Jeff would take care of it!

I myself like going back some times and look at some old pictures and see how some fo us have come along with our photographic talents!

But to each their own I guess....

That's not a bad idea Kiwi. If the new thread could be set up with a monthly thread within it. Might make it easier to navigate.

Trust me, being a Super Mod at a major computer tech website for over 5 years...we aren't near the limit ;)

Though it is definetely one of the longest running threads I've seen.

On the down side of the idea is if someone comes across a shot by someone and likes the work, they can easiy search within the thread for all other shots by that member...rather than having to search across mulitple threads...

I also like the idea. is it possible to convert it to a sticky. Perhaps a folder where it contains all the previous yearly potd threads. Make a title where newcomers can easy see the members' pictures.

Well then... close away and start a new one! ;)

Why? If we arent anywhere near the limit, why close?

I really don't think this qualifies as a "bailOut" so leave it alone. :p

Oh, it's just that I don't care if it is closed now upon finding out that keeping it going won't result in any exciting technical challenges or any records being broken ;) It seemed to be the general preference to close it...

I'm with Jcon.

The POTD thread is a bit sacred to me, it shows how much nicer people and better shots we are than the faries at the bottom of the garden;)

I'd love to have it better accessable but I'd hate to lose it. There's also something satisfying about chronological filing. If it was restructured in a coherent way by Jeff then I wouldn't object though.

Nikon POTD thread
Links to each year thread.

Or better
Nikon POTD thread and instead of hyperlinks to page 1, 2, 3 etc you have hyperlinks to each year within the one thread.
