I don't really know how to title this, but here's the question:

I read somewhere about a person commenting that there were different "copies" of the lens(different shipments i suppose), and that sometimes when a lens comes out not quite right, it is improved or corrected in later shipment or "copies." does anyone know how to tell which "copy" of a lens you have? the lens i have now is the canon 17-85 IS, but this question is about all lenses in general.

the reason I am concerned is that there are some very different opinions about the 17-85mm lens in particular and i'm thinking the different "copies" have something to do with it(i read that the first two "copies" of the 17-85 were very bad). I've tried taking some pics in harsh backlighting and indoors and haven't noticed any CA. I've also noticed that the lens gets sharper towards the telephoto end but there isn't a huge difference at wide angle like some people have mentioned.
