I just picked up a memory card reader for 20$ (sandisk 5 in 1)and am dissapointed, i can only view my photos by double clicking on each one individually, the only thing it allows me to do is rotate the photo, i cannot enlarge it or crop it, I am able to zoom in on it though. I guess I thought there were more features with getting one of these. Why are other people buying these? for what reasons? Is it only so you can view your photos without using the battery in your camera? I only view my photos on my own computer at home, so if I were to use the battery out of my camera, I could turn right around and recharge it. just curious as to why other people are using these, or maybe im missing something?

Card readers are just that... they read. It's usually connected through the USB port to your computer, thus making it hardware. Sounds like you need some software once you get your pictures transferred over to you main harddrive. Some easy one's are Picaso (free download), MGI Photosuite, Adobe Photoshop, and I even use Corel's Photosuite.
I bought a 12 in 1 reader before Christmas. Cool devices, but mine will only allow one card at a time. Still better than connecting straight to the camera! :)

I actually have two card readers - one for SD and one for CF. I used my girlfriend's 8-in-one reader and just found it clunky in comparison.
The Gimp has a wide user base - that's a free download too. Personally, I use photoshop elements and my girlfriend uses Ulead Photo Editor.

What did you expect from the reader it is only ment for transfering photos its not a editing tool but if you whant to edited I would go for adobe photo products probly there elements product for Photoshop might be to pricing and its not realy as auto mated as elements is but its way more powerfull if you can use it

A card reader is like a floppy drive - it just reads the cards you insert. Unless it was bundled with software you'll have to download freeware or buy something. I think the latest Picasa is the bee's knees. Photobrush is also nice and they have a few free utilities at their website www.mediachance.com.
Go to www.snapfiles.com and look in the freeware section for lots of free graphics programs.
