View Full Version : How would you take this shot? (Moving Subject)

I was wondering how would this shot be taken (with manual settings available) where a subject moves fast. For example, a quick moving car. The car must be clear and in sharp focus while the background can be blurred out. I know when the shutter speed is low, both the car and background are blurred out. What possible settings can keep the car clear but the background blurred?

The whole trick here is to use a moderate shutterspeed, I don't know, say 1/100, but to match the pace of the car in the fiewfinder as you're taking the shot. That way the car looks as though it is clear because relative to the motion of your camera, it is not moving, and the background comes out blurred b/c it is moving in your frame.

So first you set the Shutter Speed to something moderate.....and then you follow the car in the viewfinder? (What I had in mind is first guess where the car will be and prepare to press the shutter as soon as the car comes in the viewfinder. Sort of like football, guess where the receiver will be and launch the ball there. But now based upon what you said, what I had in mind would probably blur the car out and keep the background clear.)

Thanks for your reply.

That's it, you got it. The motion that's happening relative to your camera is what gets blurred so if your camera is pacing what you're shooting at, no blur on your subject. So if you're in say another car moving at the same speed as your car subject, the ground around the subject car will be blurred but the car will be clear and steady in frame.
