Frank... I know you are excited, but how do you get a 400mm shot out of a 300mm lens? It is a Tokina 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6... just to avoid the mass hysteria and corn-fusion. Great lens for the money, by the way. :D

The only problem with taking photographs out of my office's windows is the coating installed on the windows produces a rainbow effect in the sky coloring. While a CPL helps with the reflections off the glass, it doesn't seem to help with that aspect.

Love that photo Sonynut!

My CF card arrived in todays mail to slot into the A300 that arrived friday, so here it is, my first post to the the Sony PotD thread!

I'm not to happy with it, focus appears to be centred on the seed head occluding the right furl of the fern, tomorrow I'll have a look for more macro-ish images and probably step down a little further to F8 or F9 to try for a little more DOF to get the whole of the central image in, taking more care to see that distracting/focus-robbing features like surrounding grass are a bit more cleared back.

The background Bokeh however, looks nice IMO,

I have a few other nice pictures, I took the A300 with it's new CF card with me as I wandered through part of the farm looking for things to shoot (with my rifle, not my camera) taking photos along the way. came back with 2 rabbits and 107 pictures, which I have just cleared down to 15 possibles.
I'll wait and work on them tomorrow on the other computer with a proper image manipulation software suite tho, this was just a quick and dirty MSPaint resize, rotate and crop job.

I'm still playing with the camera yet, learning how it feels and how the menus work.

Frank, that's a potentially stunning image, weed or not.
The way the stalk predominates the composition taking the eye up and out of the images is a problem.
Difficult to do much but I think that if you tilt the camera to diagonalise the stalk so it exits right and get in closer, you could improve it.

Frank, the tammie is only good stopped down to f16 absolute tops, even then you should try and avoid stopping down past f11 if possible. By f22 you've lost around 40% of your sharpness. With the 5.6 shot, I would have preferred the focus on the top of the pencil as that's where the eye is drawn to.

So, the snow falls and December arrives... no, in Chicago it was the vice-versa. Mid-December snow, this year. Not much... just reminder of what's in store.

Of course, the holidays come roaring in and demand we respond... to stave off the grim solace of the coldest season of the year. We fight this distressing period with LIGHT! To that end, I set up my Christmas tree, still sans all the beautiful ornaments... but chuck full of lights and tackled it, this time, with the SIGMA 20mm f/1.8 DG EX RF and my newer SIGMA 85mm f/1.4 DG EX HSM lens, just to see what kind of bokeh I could achieve contrast the two of them. I HDR'd them a bit... just to pop some of the color, and layered in the bokeh, but you can kind of see the specific differences.

58673

Yes, you might try this at home! LOL

Season's Greetings, folks!

EDIT: Finished adding the ornamentation...

Erad,

Are you familiar with the AF-C continuous focusing mode of the camera? When this mode is used in concert with the rapid shutter or continuous advance (□□□) drive mode, while you hold down the shutter release --> every time the moving subject hits the focusing "spot," the camera instantly adjusts and refocuses the lens on the subject and trips the shutter. I have used it on jet aircraft, roaring in or away from me at hundreds of miles per hour, so your pup should present less of a challenge at 15mph.

I shot this one with a manually-focused Rokinon 85mm @ f/1.4... so it can be done without the fancy-schmancy AF-C/Cont. Adv combination. You just have to be queued up on your center of focus and... pop that shutter.

Give it a try.

lol, an aircraft is a piece of cake to lock onto compared to a little psycho pup darting around you head on.

Here is an American Coot I took the other day. These birds are very shy when it comes to getting there picture taken. Every time I stop to get a shot they swim off. This time the stood close for a few shots.

A long time ago, when Don was a just wee-lad, in 1966, the Ideal Toy Company released a new collection called "Captain Action." This was a twelve-inch pose-able figure that had a collection of licensed costumes and masks that it could change into, becoming the visage of several different superheroes and characters. The series kind of lost popularity going into the 70's... but then, in 1996, another toy company (Playing Mantis) took up the challenge and re-released the series, with licensing only from certain groups and, again, without having obtained licensing from the more popular characters, the second-release did poorly and production ceased.

Captain Action (2012) has, once again, risen from the ashes of the past, having successfully reacquired some of the more popular character licenses.

I had a chance to mess around in the studio and in light of the upcoming "Avengers"-movie release, on May 4, 2012, I present Captain Action (http://www.captainaction.com/) as "Captain America":

Still in the studio... "toying" with ideas. Again, with the Captain's new release... I went with the Amazing Spider-Man outfit he can change into and came up with this:

and just to keep the ball rolling... some future outfit considerations:

One of the suggestions I received when posting the earlier images was to make it look more "3D."

While that is all fine and whatnot... it takes time to set it all up. So, in the meantime, I'm tossing out this shot... to temporarily cover the bases.

The site seems real quiet. I have been checking it every few days and haven't seen many posts. I bought Don's Tamron 60mm Macro lens. Here are a images I took. All were taken hand held.

Love the fly in the first one. I wish that the wings were not lost in the high key backlighting.

One of the great things about Illinois (I know, I know - we know debt like no other state), is the Illinois Railway Museum. It's about 40 minutes along I-90, going west from Chicago, out in Union, IL, but still is a terrific way to demonstrate the history of the railroad... with stuff that still works.

Diesel Days is just one such demonstration, because they brought out one of the most famous diesels, the "Nebraska Zepher", and ran it up and down the tracks a few times. Truly an amazing historical train and the coach air conditioning is the same system they used from 1936! 76 years --> still operational and... cool.

Anyway, here is one of the shots from today with the mighty Zepher under power!
