Hi
I have a d40 - what is the best way to prevent vs. LCD scratches. And I'm asking about a glass protector, not to just be careful - I know the way you guys are.
The D40 like all DSLR's actually has a fairly solid protector built into the body. What you touch on the back of the camera is the protector not the LCD itself.
On my D50 which has the same arrangement I have just used a film (the sort you put on a PDA that costs a few cents per application) over the LCD area. My camera has spent three years being dragged around in motorcycle panniers and tank bags, bouncing around on the floor of my Land Rover under the seat without being in a case and generally being not particularly well looked after. There is not a mark of any description on the inbuilt LCD cover.
If you really want a hardware solution look at vendors like Delkin (link here (http://www.delkin.com/products/popupshades/index.html)) but IMO based on my experience there are other things I would spend money on first.

I had a Delkin pop-up hood on my K100D. It has a stick-on glass panel and a removable 3-sided "pop-up" hood (2 sides and the top). Eventually, 1 side got lost somewhere. Later, out in Joshua Tree national monument, I lost the entire hood. I haven't bothered to get one for my new camera however, as the hood never really helped viewing in bright light, and I'm not too concerned about scratches. The shade is about $10 and comes in various sizes.

I got a really cheap screen protector they use for mobile phones, its quite good, and does the job quite well. The LCD though already has a thick layer of protection, but I just got it just in case. You can visit any local cell phone store and get it done instantly. Many cellphones has the same screen size as the typical 2.5" LCD on D40. The whole thing cost me (Rs.40) <$1, and he gave me a bag of free cloths to clean the LCD for future lol :D.

Also check GGS glass screen protectors. You can find 'em on eBay that are made specifically for your model.
I have 'em on both my D300 & D700.
