I am getting comments about being on Flickr Explore with my space shuttle photo. I was wondering what that means. I didnt get any notifications or anything from flickr stating that.
Whats flickr explore and how did my photo get there? Thanks Guys

No idea mate.
But it is rather generous of you to put the original full size on there for everybody to download!

Oh...yeah well...I shoot for fun and like to share my pictures. If someone wants it, no biggie. Maybe one day when I am making money with my photos, I might change the settings....maybe haha!

Fair play to you, good attitude.
But I have had a picture stolen and I'm not even any good.
It annoyed me, if they had asked then I'd probably have said yes but they didn't even have the decency.

Yeah...you have a good point. Talking to a few friends and they feel I should not let people download the original size.

How many thousands have you now spent on gear let alone for all those hours learning.
I wouldn't give anything away for free by default if I were you. Sure make a conscious decision to donate something but don't get "robbed" by default.
flickr explore is basically a popularity contest. it is an algorithm that basically selects photos based on views/ faves/ comments and who is actually doing the viewing etc. it is significantly influenced by how many groups, (and which ones), you post photos to.
it is, imo, a complete load of rubbish. some of the photos that make explore are pathetic and some that don;t "make it" are magnificent.
some that don;t "make it" are magnificent.
Do I detect a sour tone here? Have we failed to "make it" at some stage? :D
lol oh yeah...how did you guess. :D

But as Rooz said its mostly a bunch of rubbish :)
What a crap idea. None of mine are in there so it's rubbish. :D

How do you know if the photos are downloadable by default?
I am not sure what mine are set to.
If ANYONE has a flickr account, can they download my photos?
In actual fact I have found out. Set it so that only I can download the originals! Purely because it has taken me ages recently to put panoramics together and it would p*ss me off if someone just had it. Like you say, I would probably let someone if they asked, but not willy nilly.
A girl at work offered to buy a photo of mine recently (this one (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3025/2975918346_b3737dd980_b.jpg) but I just gave it to her.
Doubt I am good enough (or have the inclination) to start marketing my photos!!
I anybody wants to sell photos online they are far better off on PBase or Smugmug rather than Flickr. Flickr is more a social networking site for photos whereas the more commercial sites have the tools and security to allow on line trading.

Thanks guys. I set to where only I can download the files. Definately a good idea.
HERC- Holy WOW..that is an amazing shot!
And about explore-
After looking into it, I feel it is a bunch of crap. I was looking through the pictures and some are absolutely fantastic, but some I was just like, "what!" I still dont know how mine made it in there though it its based off views and groups and stuff. I dont get that many views on my photos :( haha
Rooz- Don't feel bad...you have more shots that should be in explore than I ever will :D I am jealous of your macro, animals shots, and camera :o haha

That's why I only upload web-sized shots to Flickr.

Herc,
You're being modest, I reckon your shots are brilliant and therefore saleable. Don't sell yourself short.
I understand if you don't want to go through the grief for an arguably small return but that doesn't make your shots any less desireable.

:o:o
Thanks. Very nice of you to say :)
Maybe you are right, but its difficult (in my opinion, some one please correct me) to get exposure and sell photos. Dont even know how I (or anyone else) would do it without preparing to put some money up front to advertise. Or am I being thick?!

I don't know how to do it either Herc but have been wondering for a while.
I think stock photos would sell poorly and at such cheap rates I don't see it as worth the bother.
I think putting your prints in local cafe's/pubs has a printing and effort outlay with probably poor sales at the end. It might generate some word of mouth and help with commissioned photography but maybe I'm being hopefull.
Wish I knew the answer.
