i just want to mess around with some lighting and I was wonder what would be the best material to use to diffuse the light? some options I'm playing with are kleenex, stretched white cloth, and baking paper. Does anyone else have a suggestion?

In what capacity?
There are a trigazillion ways to diffuse a gazillion types of light.
In other words, your question is so open ended, there's no way to answer without writing a book in a single post. Maybe someone else will do it, but I won't. Can you say "Carpal Tunnel"?

oh i'm just trying to diffuse the light from a LED head lamp. I'm going to Costa Rica tuesday and i'm looking for a last minute lighting utility to aid my macro work. Should i just look at getting a reflector?

White coffee filters are easy; I've used them before - attached with a rubber band. You can vary how many you use to change the "strength".
