I bought a Nikon D60 in June, 2008, practiced a bit in anticipation of a 2 week Europe vacation, got to Amsterdam, after two days I got an error message to turn the camera off and then on again. That didn't do anything. I tried several solutions, removing the battery, replacing the battery, changing lenses, memory cards, etc., with no luck. It has now been taken to Best Buy and they're sending it to Nikon for repairs (under warranty and the protection plan).
The camera was not dropped, damaged in any way that I could tell. I was terribly disappointed, as I had to rely on a point and shoot camera that we take along as a back up and to use in certain situations.
I am just wondering if there are others with a similar problem. Also, in the manual, there is no mention of this message, though I'm sure I remember reading somewhere in the material that that particular message didn't mean the camera had a problem, just turn it off and on again, but since that didn't fix the problem, we were out of luck. I didn't have reliable Internet access, or I would have tried to contact Nikon for advice. I have also attempted to get an answer directly from Nikon since returning, but so far no luck.
Thanks for any comments.

I'm sure of you Nikon DSLR experts out there, or experts in general, have some theories! I am wondering if this is an exception to the model, or if there have been others with similar problems.

Sorry can not offer advice here, hope it works out fast for you.
Just did not want you to think you were being ignored. You did all the
basic things that you could. Good Luck

Where did you see this message?
The only error message on the D50 is on the top LCD display and it certainly does not tell you to turn the camera off and on.
Was the message on the rear LCD and EXACTLY what did it say?

K1W1: The camera is a Nikon D 60, not 50, and the LCD on the back of the camera is where I got the error message. It said, exactly: !ERROR: turn the camera off and then on again. The Geek Squad person at Best Buy said he'd never seen that message, either. But that is exactly what it said, and the rest of the LCD was more or less faded out.
This message is not listed in my manual that I can find under the list of error messages. Somewhere in my material, or with the person from Best Buy that did the one hour intro with me, that very message came up, but I can't find it in the written material at all.

sounds like just bad luck. i've never heard of it before either. its under warranty so while annoying, at least it'll get fixed and given back to you for nothing.

Yes, at least it is under warranty. I can't get those photo opportunities back, though, and two weeks in Europe is not something we've ever done before and will probably be a while before we do again. I do have a Rome trip in March with a friend, and I just hope to find out if this is a problem with MY camera or the D60 in general. I certainly want a reliable camera, and even though it is an entry-level camera, it still should function much longer than 4 months!
I do appreciate you taking the time to write. I'm just frustrated and still operating on Europe time, might be a little grumpy.

A short update: Nikon wrote that they really don't know what this means. My camera is on the way there, so hopefully they will figure it out.
They also said they would inform the proper department that the error message I received is not in the manual. I think that is the most frustrating part of this problem.
How can I get an error message that even Nikon doesn't know about?
