Was trying a few things with fill flash and I had two images come up with a dark area that I'm not sure why.

Both images were strongly backlit which did result in flare. I'm not sure if the flare may have remotely somehow caused the problem. About 4-5 shots were before this occured and about 10-12 more after that had no problems at all.

I was kind of thinking a shutter or mirror issue, but was thinking that wouldn't result in a diagonal blockage and only on two images out of a series. And the 5D probably has less than a 1000 shots on it.

Highly likely I did something not too bright, but I can't think of what it would be.

I don't mean to be rude, but are you sure it's not your finger, camera strap, jacket, or similar? I've done that before :)

Did you buy the 5D new or used? There are known issues with the mirrors, though I have no idea if that's what you're experiencing here.

I didn't think so, only because the front of the lens with the hood mounted put it fairly well out forward that I didn't think that something could get in front of it, unless it might have been that Vampires cape . Yup, I've done the finger thing with a small P&S once or twice.

The 5D was new. I have heard of the mirrors coming unglued, but I would think once it happened all images taken would have been hosed up.
