View Full Version : How would you spend 100 bucks?

Hey, so I got a gift card to a local store (Henrys) and I'm not sure what to get!

It's 100 bucks which is a lot of money but in a photography store maybe not so much. ;)

I was thinking a decent circular polarizer, or just save it up for a lens or something.

Is there any sub 100 dollar trinkets you can suggest?

filters - batteries - tripod heads - memorycards....that' s all I can think of....

If you asked me three years ago, I woulda recommended a 50mm f/1.8.

I've become a gentler soul since then. I don't wish that kind of ill will on anybody these days.

Heh and when I was saying the 50mm f1.8 was not a cheap good lens but an expensive bad lens, people were mocking me.

I have the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 - which I naively purchased, thinking it would be good. Certainly - it is good optically but the focussing is poor. I focussed on a stationary bra, hanging off a doorknob while the camera was on a tripod. I then pressed to focus again and again and each time it focussed in a different place despite the focus-point remaining in the same place.

Nah Rhys you're mistaken. We mock you just to mock you. :D :p

I'm getting a wireless remote from ebay for $9 including shipping!

Remote, portable tripods (ones you just have in your gear bag to take on the go), bag, filter (or portion of a good filter), flash cable, payment towards a new lens.

hmmm it's a gift certificate, so you can't buy cybersyncs.

i'd put it toward a battery grip...or another memory card.

One of my most useful items for on-location shooting is my 5-in-1 reflector. With the cover off it's translucent. With the cover on, it's silver on one side, and gold on the other. Flip the cover, and it's white on one side, black on the other. That would be under $100 for a useable size.

GaryS
10-28-2008, 01:31 PM
I would get a monopod. Plus one of those little mini-heads for it so that I could use the same QR that my tripod uses.

Nickcanada
10-28-2008, 02:55 PM
Good ideas! I like the reflector idea but looking outside I don't see when I would actually get to use it. The grip idea is good but the grip is like 350 bucks there! F that. I could use another bag. we'll see, maybe I'll just save it up for the 5D mkII! lol!

Sell it to someone who shops at henrys. I find henrys to be rather expensive on most (if not all) items. Especially some of the items that have been mentioned.

Then you can use that money anywhere... at hvstar for CPOLs, ebay for remotes, etc, etc

Well it's not like he could sell it for face value. Why buy a $100 gift card for $100 when you can just give the store $100 cash?

I'd rather just use it.

eh, I know one couldn't sell it for face value, even at a small loss you're still ahead with henrys (yes, i don't like that store, it is probably just the local one, but there customer service bites, i've been treated horribly there, even when i've made intentions of laying out a decent sum of cash)

anyways, to each there own.

Nick, enjoy the new goodies you manage to snag... one decent deal I've seen, they have the 8gb extreme 3 cf cards for 80 bucks on sale if you're in need of more memory; these are the newer ones rated at 30mb/s as well. Broke down and picked one up myself, was hard to pass that up...

Hmmm, well I guess I've been lucky. I always enjoy going in to shoot the shit with the sales guys. I usually get some decent discounts.

That does sound like a great deal for a card! I could always use more memory. I guess I would need a larger card for my imaginary 5D mkII with all the video and large file sizes. :D

Not sure about the workshop. I already know everything.

Do you need a new bag? I just bought the KATA DR-461 from Henry's for $60 + tax and it's awesome. It holds all 3 of my lenses, all my accessories and comes with a handy rain cover

Nickcanada

I was thinking of a new bag. I could use one, but I just spent it at lunch. I'll show everyone what I got latter on tonight.

Thanks for all the suggestions, lots of great ideas.

Sweet. :)

I recommend Newton brackets. If they won't ship to Canada and you still decide on one of those, I'll take delivery & forward it to you.

From what I know Newton makes the best brackets.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/326962-REG/Newton_Camera_Brackets_DI100FR2_Di100FR2_Folding_F lash_Rotator.html

They are smaller and less cumbersome then other more popular designs. Don has one and posted some pictures of it in another thread a while ago, you could probably do a quick search.

I don't know if Newton are the best, but they're up there & as far as I know they're the least cumbersome.

Unlike other brackets I've had, the Newton is actually enjoyable to use.

Nickcanada
11-01-2008, 10:20 AM
I say the best because all of the "better" ones I've seen are freaking huge and expensive. Newton looks like the best value imo.

cdifoto
11-01-2008, 10:21 AM
Yeah there's only one thing worse than looking like a wanker and that is feeling like a wanker. I feel stupid enough when I accept a check for over a grand then forget to take the lens cap off. I don't need a big metal tentacle too.
