Lost Photos how do I get them back?

I recently tried to upload pictures from my XD memory card and when I tried I kept getting this pop up that said that the photo can't be uploaded because it was the wrong format so I clicked SKIP thinking that it will skip the photos that won't be able to upload and move on to the next but the next thing I know over 30 of my pictures are gone from my memory card and I can't find them on my laptop. Does any one have any suggestions on how I might be able to get them back? Please! I'm heart broken over them they are very important pictures. some one help!
