Would that be a decent price for that camera? (btw the few currency conversion websites I tried don't quite agree with each other - £389 (total price including shipping) converts to anywhere from $629.17 to $638.75, with the vast majority ~$633. This is within my projected price range.

Here's the response I got back from the vendor, AskDirect.co.uk (http://www.askdirect.co.uk/):

Dear *******,

Thank you for your inquiry.

This item is not released in UK yet. It is expected to be released in 2-3 weeks time. Unfortunately Canon is unable to confirm the release date.

We can ship to USA by UPS courier. It will cost you £50.00 in delivery charges including insurance. Once we dispatch it will be delivered within 3 working days.

We can invoice you ex vat. This makes your purchase £339.00 ex vat + £50.00 in delivery charges. = £389.00 in total.

Unfortunately our web site is not equipped to deal with credit card payment for non UK orders. However we do accept payment by Bank Transfer.

You may place an order with Bank Transfer option in payment method. I will inform you with our bank details when the goods are in stock so that you may transfer the funds.

I hope this will help you to decide.

Best Regards,
*** *******

Delivery in 3 days sounds like pretty good time... They say it should be available in 2-3 weeks (and also say Canon can't confirm the release date). I hope to purchase it no later than early December, maybe earlier (early to mid November, if possible, but I would like to see some non-official sample images (zoom range, ISO tests, etc) posted from that camera before I buy it).

I underlined one thing that I was wondering about - does anyone know how bank transfers work? I think on their website they take paypal (which can do bank transfer), but... well.... I should reply to his email and find out.

I'm hoping to.... I'll have to wait till November or early December to order it, though.

One thing I'm concerned about is Customs / importation fees / forms - what would I need to do to get it taken care of? I would like to have the camera arrive at my doorstep in southern California no later than 12-22-2008.

Better just hold off for a couple more years.

I think they'll charge insurance, just pay that and get it shipped asap and STOP WORRYING

what is more important is developing your photography skills than anything.
