After having taken photos for nothing at the Special Olympics Gala fundraiser I've now been enrolled into taking photos for the Special Olympics in Anderson, SC the weekend after next. Not bad - I don't get paid but I get expenses this time.

it's not a direction I was heading in. I'd been trying to get more into wedding photography (I've had a few but not that many). I've wowed people with my scenics (at various exhibitions) but not many have bought them. Maybe sports photography is going to be where my true calling comes through?

I figure it's a great idea to do stuff like this on the basis that I get seen to be doing things by people who might hire me to do other stuff. It's great free publicity. And I can possibly write it off for tax purposes too since it's a charity. Businesswise there are a lot of upsides. The only downside is it isn't paid.

I'm trying to do the same....freebie or working for peanuts....
if it does not impact you in a bad way financially there is no harm doing it....

I've been doing a few restaurant menu shots for some bar owners around town. I don't get paid, except for the food I eat and the beer I drink while shooting, but I am making loads of contacts and people are starting to throw my name around a bit more for more work. Plus, in your case it is for a good cause.

Not only that but it's free advertising. Each time they use a photo, my license states they have to print my name, company name and website. They're then free to use the photos at whatever size they wish and I give them full-size JPEGS. I figure they're not making any money from it so why worry :d

Good point. Free advertisement never hurt anybody's business eh?;)

Exactly AND it's deductable as a charity donation.

it's deductable as a charity donation.

So how does that work? Do you set a dollar amount to what you think your expenses were, ie. time, labour and travel expenses, and use that amount as a deduction? As there is no actual cash being donated to the charity, how do you come up with a value? This is very interesting and something I should know more about..........But do not:(:p

You just work out what you'd normally charge and then write a receipt for that amount and get the charity to sign it. Then you pass it to your accountant.

I do hope so. It's actually going to be my first couple of nights away from my wife since we started living together in March 2005. Hard to believe we've been apart only two nights since March 6th 2005.

Here's the schedule - it's going to be tricky to cover it all. I'll probably cover bits of it all since there will most likely be several heats.

Anderson's a rough area which makes it trickier since many of the events are in Federally-regulated no-carry zones.

:):)

Looks like a pretty busy agenda. Hope you've got alot of memory cards!!

It may be a freebie, but your rewards will be knowing you're doing a good thing for all their participants and the organization and I don't doubt it will lead to other job prospects of the paying variety.

Have fun!!
