You can use UFRaw to modify raw images and it can be included into the GIMP.
The GIMP is a lot easer to install on windows now as the GTK program is all in the one installer.
I use it as I can not justify buying psp for the amount of times I use it.

Thanks, guys...
Tried photoshop lightroom first and found it to be quite limited, or at least quite hard to pick up, and then theres the cost. I couldn't justify just short of 100 pounds for the amount of time it will get used.
Then tried the Gimp program with UFRaw plug in and it was very easy to use, did most of the things I require from this type of program and is free... So GIMP it is...

Lightroom 2 is not limited at all. Sounds like you need to get to know the software :)

You can also try converting your RAW images to DNG. DNG is an open lossless format that was developed by Adobe to create a standard for the RAW image format hell created by camera manufacturers. Most digital image applications and image management systems will handle the DNG format once you've converted your RAW to DNG. Just make sure you don't imbed a JPEG preview in your DNG file when you convert and you should be fine. I had problems with DNGs with JPEG previews imbedded not working on Aperture.
You can get Adobe's RAW to DNG file converter here for free. (http://tinyurl.com/48b7cr)
Photoshop Elements will open the RAW files and convert them to TIFF for editing. Lightroom 2 is hardly limited. It depends on your editing style. If you're a "layers" person it just a rethink.

haha i almost fell out of my chair when i read that.
lightroom is by far the best thing that's happened to my photography-wise. if you're anything like me with taking 500 pics every time you pull the camera out, you NEED it or software like it. and i hardly ever open a pic in photoshop anymore. it does just about everything and more that i need. the ONLY time i open photohop now is if i need some extensive layering.

I still have to send pics to PS when I need to see how it will look sized down with smart sharpening (final result). Sometimes I need to check this if I have some blur from either focus or motion. Smart sharpening will correct it surprisingly well, but some pics are too far gone and the only way I can judge if it will come out ok is by doing the actual action.
PS is still needed for final batch resize / smart sharpen and save.
