Hey guys

I just recently traded in my Optio S40 for SD300 and I have a few questions regarding its video storage.

Here is the problem

The SD300 uses up more memory then the Optio S40 when taking videos at 320x240 at 30fps.

On a 512mb card I'm using the ATP X60 I can get up to 19'30'' ( minutes' seconds'' ) on the Optio S40 when recording 320x240 at 30fps. Video is saved as AVI file and the audio is the same which is PCM

Where as I can only get 11'19'' ( minutes' seconds'' ) with my SD300 when recording 320x240 at 30fps. Video format is AVI and the audio is PCM

The Optio nearly gets twice as much video as the SD300

I'm wondering why the SD300 uses up more memory when both use the same video size, video format and audio format?

Is there a difference in video quality?

Does the extra space make the quality of the video bettor?

Is the SD300 inferior to the Optio S40 when recording videos?

Here are some things that I've researched and found out. I don't understand them entirely but here goes. I was told the amount of kbps in video probably is the reason why the storage is higher thus making it bettor video quality but my source wasn't sure. The audio is slightly bettor on the Optios S40 but again I'm not sure

this is a thread to confirm an answer to my quetsion.

SD300

Video Format: AVI format, Video kbps is nearly twice as much as the Optio S40, on a 512mb card you get 11'12'' of video

Audio Format: PCM bit rate is 88kbps, Audio Sample Size 8bit

Optio S40

Video Format: AVI Format, Video kbps is half as much as the SD300 on a 512mb card you get 19'30'' of video.

Audio Format: PCM bit rate is 128kbps, Auido Sample is 16 bit

Possible Factors involved

- Canon uses a less efficient or a less aggressive compression algorithm

- Video quality on the SD300 is much higher

- Different Camera opersating system, meaning different way of storing data

- Possibility of lower frame rate then stated for Optio S40

My Observations

I've compared video quality they both look the same to me, sound sounds the same and the only difference I notice is that.... the SD300 takes up way more space then the Optio S40 almost 50% more space.

Anyways for those who may know or have a very good guess please let me know thanks. I will finaly sleep bettor if I get an answer.

Empty out the card and record some nonsensical video using both cameras and go to "format card" to see whether the SD300 has really taken up all the memory. I always goto "format card" to check how much space is left. When I'm done, I just select "cancel"

I've done numerous testings and it is true the SD300 takes up 50% more space then my optio S40

I've done comparism videos at the same frame pers seconed, size, and the amount of video pers second.

The SD300 takes more....

Does anyone know why? I feel like I'm getting gyped here :(

The Optio S40 has internal memory which the SD300 doesn't. Did you change the default 11MB onboard memory with a larger capacity one? That could explain the difference.

its true that the Optio S40 has 11mb of internal memory but when you stick in an SD card it reads off of that until the memory on the SD is full then you get the internal memory as back up.

The 20 minutes is just from the 512mb card alone.

I've also compared videos as well looked at my previous Optio S40 videos lets say it was running for 10 seconds I'd and I'd do a record through with my SD300 for 10seconds and I'd transfer it to PC and the recordings would show that the SD300 takes up 50% more space for the same amount of time for a recording.

Plus 11mb only gets you probably gives you about 26 seconds on the Optio where 26 seconds on the SD would cost you like 19mb

Not knowing anything about video storage, I'll still hazard a guess that the Canon uses a less efficient or a less aggressive compression algorithm. You might not be able to see it on the computer easily unless you go into video editing software. It's the same with photo storage, some cameras take more memory to store an image than others, due to JPG compression algorithms. There are trade-offs between size, speed, and lossy algorithms.

You know what Dave... I've noticed that my Optio S40 when taking pictures at the highest settings pictures ranges from 2.1-3mb average of 2.3mb per picture where as the SD300 the pictures are roughly around 1.2-25 but an average of of 1.5mb per picture.

I found this strange though because regardless of what types of pictures I took I had at least 2.3mb jpeg for the Optio S40

And the SD300 I ranged depending on how colourful the picture was usualy though the data size of the picture was really low though like 1.4 or 1.4mb per picture on the highest setting.

Thanks for your educated guess on the subject.

Anyone else willing to give it a go? :)

Could be partially due to the fact that the Optio has 4.0 effective megapixels and the sd300 has 3.9. Doesn't seem like the difference should be that drastic though. In that case I'd vote for the progression algorighm difference. The 2 companies probably use differing compression ratios on their default settings.
