View Full Version : camera manufacturers update their product lines WAY TOO SLOW....

....but..... FINALLY!! the upgrade to the Canon Powershot S1 IS is coming!

The SX1 IS. (It should have come out at least 2-3 years ago, or when the S2 came out.)

Unfortunately, not to the USA, so I'll have to import it. I found (on a dpreview thread) a good price on a camera site from Australia on the SX10 (~$340 vs $400 local) - hopefully the SX1 will be priced reasonably. Someone in another thread also linked me a Polish site where their price converts to just a little over $600 for the SX1.

Am I the only one that has this opinion that updates are generally way too minimal from generation to generation?

For that price forget it...get a DSLR.

Needs to be much much cheaper to sell well.

Remember the "upgrades" to the Fuji F30/31? Some things should be updated. But not everything...

Have you ever actually looked at all the digital cameras introduced in the past couple years? I counted 157 from January to September of this year alone!

Yes, I have, but each generation IMO usually isn't enough of an update over the previous generation.

For example, going from 9mp to 10mp, 3.5x to 4x optical zoom, ISO 800 to ISO 1000 max sensitivity (with the noise worse at 800 than before), 320x240 15fps movie limited to 3 minutes, 1fps burst shooting, is basically IMO a "nightly patch". On the other hand, jumping from, say, 4mp to 12mp, 4x to 10x zoom, ISO 400 to ISO 1600 (with 3200 on the new one being as clean/detailed as 400 on the old (without pixel-binning)), 1080p 60fps limited only by available memory when formatted NTFS/ext2/OS-X format, 4fps burst, while keeping the body size the same, IS a major update.
In the last several years, look where computers have gone. It was only a few years ago that a typical mainstream computer might have a Pentium 3 800MHz CPU, 128MB RAM, a 4GB HDD, but now we have dual-core 2.6GHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD. I don't see camera specs evolving as quickly....

Also, I remember recently seeing an article on dpreview that said in an interview the engineers wanted to do one thing, but the marketing department said no. I would like to know (and not just for that mfgr) what cameras we would have if the senior (50+ years of service per person) engineers have the final say as to what goes in the product...

There's no rule or law that says you have to buy every new model that comes out. It's perfectly okay to stick with what you have.

Of course the assumption is that you already have something...not that you constantly ask what camera to buy without ever buying one.

Probably show us some ISO tests, complain about it, then put it in the closet.

For quite a while I had a Canon S1 IS. Now that it's kaput, I hope to buy the SX1 if I can import it for under $650 US (and have it delivered) before Dec 23, '08. I checked out one place in Australia that I had found the SX10 for a good price on, but the SX1 isn't available there yet, and even if it was, they only ship to Australia.

If I was a moderator I'd ban you until you bought your camera.

Really, you can import it. somehow

That's what I'm looking into doing - importing it. Even if I don't get a USA-based warranty, that would probably be OK, so long as either it's not TOO expensive to ship it back to the originating country if problems arise, or I can purchase (for a reasonable price) a warranty locally.

I've been looking at several sites trying to find one that'll ship to the USA, or where it's under $700 including shipping, but they seem to be evading my search. (Yes, I know it's not available now, but one site in the UK says it's available 11-30-08 and in Japan it's available 12-25-08. I need it in my possession no later than 12-23-08.

One site in Australia doesn't have pricing on it, yet, but the SX10's price there is good. They don't ship to the US, though.

One UK site (Amazon) is reasonably priced, but won't ship to the US. Another amazon UK linked site WILL ship here, but is like $800 or more.

here's a thread in the where should I buy forum where I'm trying to get suggestions for where I can import it from. (http://dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?p=334893#post334893) See my last post in the thread for the latest...

Also I clicked on several of the "where to buy" links on some of the Canon sites, and they want a street address. I'm looking for online retailers based in their country that ship internationally, not brick-and-mortar stores so I can physically go buy the camera. I'm not planning to take a trip overseas just to buy a camera - if I was, that would knock the price of the trip off what I'd be willing to pay for the camera.

Anyone know of international online stores that ship to the USA, and would be likely to have the SX1 when it becomes available? (I'd prefer one whose website is in English, but if it's possible to use a translator, for example Google, I could probably use a site in a foreign language. Also I could understand some Spanish possibly, just not fluently.)

Maybe you should just build your own to your specs.

I've looked at ebay, but none of the 15 or so sites I've searched have any SX1 listings yet. Am I looking too early? Some other non-ebay sites have the SX1, but either are too expensive or don't ship here, and they say coming soon, pre-order, etc. I've sometimes seen similar things (placeholders, if you want to call them that) on ebay, if I remember correctly (although it's been quite a while), but I don't see the SX1 at all.
