View Full Version : Canon SX1 (on Canon's sites).... where to find prices?

Ok, so last night I killed some time by individually searching all of Canon's international sites for the SX1, and compiled a list of links (not all of them have the SX1 - in fact a few were a full generation if not more behind the curve, and dang Mexico for not having the SX1 :( I live just ~45 minutes from Tijuana and would have gone down there to buy one :( )... but... here's my question... for the ones that aren't in english, or that I can't figure out (or, better yet, for all of them) what's a good way to find out where I could order one when it becomes available, and find out what the price is in local currency? (Then I could probably go on Google and find out the exchange rate or something like that.)

And, if I can't get one at all by the 2nd (or latest 3rd) week in December, or if it's more than, say, $550 to $625 (factoring in the exchange rate), then I may have to go with the SX10.
I played with one in Ritz the other day (SX10) where they sell it for $399, and I'd have to say I'd actually probably be happy with it if I couldn't get the SX1. I was VERY impressed with the improvement they've made in high ISO performance, for example. (Keep in mind, though, this is compared with the S1 IS which has recently died, but I've seen online comparisons to the S5 (its predecessor) and IMO the SX10's 1600 looks as good as if not better than the S5's 800.) Pretty much the only thing I dont like about the SX10 is the fact that they limited the video mode to 640x480. Even 1280x720 would be an improvement on the SX10, and I would have welcomed a 1280x720 option on the SX1 (for those of us that don't want to use 1920x1080, but feel 640x480 is too pixelated). Maybe in a future firmware update a 720p option could become available for the SX1? (Lack thereof isn't a deal breaker for me to try to pursue purchasing one.)

The price range in Poland: $615~$650 (this will surely drop as the camera is not yet widely available in all major stores)
(1 Polish zloty = $2,61)

Thanks for the link.

I was looking @ dpreview's forum and someone linked a site in Australia which doesn't have pricing on it yet, but based on the price of their SX10, it converts to about $340 USD, whereas locally it's $400. So Aussie'd be another option to get it, too.

http://digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/category8_1.htm

The SX1 is at the bottom of the list.

Now.... has anyone seen any high ISO or long zoom (against a backlit background) shots taken with the SX1? I'm impressed with some shots I've seen with the SX10 (and a few I've taken in a store), but the SX1 has a CMOS sensor instead of a CCD and I was wondering how much of a difference for IQ that would be.

Also... one quick note... IMO, pretty much all camera manufacturers take way-too-small baby steps when updating their cameras from generation to generation. IMO, the SX1 IS is what the S2 (or maybe a theoretical S2.5) IS should have been.
However.... since the S1 is the last one I had, and the SX1 is a worthy upgrade (although I wish it would have come out 3 years ago :D) I plan to buy one (from overseas obviously as it won't be available in the USA) ASAP - earliest = when I can afford it, latest (unless something happens) = about a week before the holiday season.

GRRRRRRR.......

So far all the sites that list it are either over $650 not including shipping, or don't ship to the USA. :(

The Australian site I linked above doesn't ship to USA.
Amazon Japan only ships to Japan, they want $615.86, and it's not available until 12-25, and I need it BEFORE then.
Amazon UK's main site wants $691.55, and only ships to UK. Another UK seller does ship internationally but they're asking $886.37.
Amazon France wants $786.90, and only ships to France & Monaco.
Amazon Germany wants $705.54 shipped internationally, or $654.78 shipped only to Germany and Austria.

I was trying to check several international Ebay sites, but my virus scanner's web shield started spiking my CPU usage to 100% and rendering my web browser useless, so I had to restart my computer, losing the post I was going to make here in the process. (I don't want to buy from ebay either if I don't have to.)

Where else should I look? I would like it delivered no later than 12-23-2008 to my doorstep in San Diego county, Calif, and don't want to pay more than $650 including shipping, but could maybe go up to $675 or $680 or so if absolutely necessary.
Also, the SX10 won't do - it doesn't have 1080p movie recording. The Panasonic FZ28 doesn't have a flip & twist LCD, and the Fuji S100fs only goes to 400mm tele, and only has a tilting LCD.

Butterfly Photo is a great merchant to use if you want to save on State tax and get lower prices than your local Best Buy or other retailer. You should visit their site. ButterflyPhoto.com (http://www.butterflyphoto.com)

I've been buying from there for years and told one of the reps Ill post a review after they threw in free expedited shipping and high grade battery for my D700.

Well I'd written the review on PG but am taking it even further here so as to let people looking for a good deal know.

ButterflyPhoto is based in the USA, so they would not have the Canon SX1. Could you recommend an overseas site that has relatively favorable pricing (under $700) and ships to the USA?

I stumbled across AskDirect.com, which is supposed to get the SX1 IS (http://www.askdirect.co.uk/uview?call=ask.productSearch&id=12316&make=Canon&topcatid=12) and ship internationally (http://www.askdirect.co.uk/uview?call=ask.Page&p=shipping#international). They were linked from Canon's UK site. Their price (with VAT) is f_399.95. Taking off VAT makes it about f_339.66 or so, just under $600 USD, in my price range. (I understand VAT is not charged for "international" orders. Should I contact them to find out what shipping costs would be to USA, or should I find another vendor? They don't say when it's going to be available, but a couple other UK sites (which don't ship internationally) basically say sometime in November, which is early enough for me.

So should I consider getting it from there, or is there another place you'd recommend?

I also found wstore.co.uk (http://www.wstore.co.uk/) (although I for some reason couldn't link directly to the SX1's page on their site) which should also be getting it, but it's a little more confusing to figure out on their site what hoops to jump through to have it shipped internationally.

The price range in Pakistan is $700 to $750. Which is very very cheap.

Thanks for the tip. I got the SX10 (which doesn't have the 4fps shooting or the 1080p movie mode) for ~$365 with tax and a case and 8GB card from NewEgg. Turns out it's a good thing I went for that instead of the SX1, as some other expenses are coming up that if I'd gone for the SX1 I wouldn't have been able to afford them, and there's a reasonable chance (considering the SX1's seems to not yet be shipping in Europe yet) that I would not have received the camera before the Xmas holidays, which was my deadline for getting a camera.
