Pointing your camera in direct sunlight

hi guys

I've read in my manual not to point the camera in any sort of light that may hurt the eyes..

Me however before reading this I take pictures and videos of direct sunlight all the time.. and I was wondering

Does it damage the camera at all or anything?

reason why I'm asking is because does this issue concern the care of your camera or does it concern your actual safety ( your eyes )
