Hello everyone. I was recently out at Miramar Marine Air Station in San Diego for the huge Air Show and have a few to share. These are resized however the original size is awesome because when you zoom in you can see a clear helmet and mask. It's pretty cool how close you get into the cockpit when zoomed.

*It looks slightly blurred but that's the effect of the pilot "pulling some g's". He came straight (photo above) and then cut up like he was a shuttle launching. It was insane live.

Before the exposure brighten below....Looks like I'm in the cockpit of another jet taking the photo. I dunno I like it. lol

Well, I played with that last one ... and came up with this level of exposure. It just looks a little more ... clear?

Good shot, though ... nice vantage point. What lens?

Don,

Thank you, you're right it definitely looks clearer. The lens? That would be the good ol Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD. With the speed of those jets I was very pleased with the lens and the A300. It was fun to see what I came home with.

Nice series of images. Another vote for the cheap Tamron 70 -300, LOL
Frank

PS Who said you can't get sharp images at full zoom? I am going to have to check my images and post a few.

Unfortunately, it takes the assistance of Photoshop to compensate for the lack of light. That's the drawback ... but, it still is a really nice capture. Good job ... just imagine what you might have done with a 70-200mm f/2.8? Assuming you have the 70-300 at its widest (base) aperture, f/2.8 would have been four times brighter at the same shutter speed.

Just something to think about.

Hell, I should talk ... I'm often shooting stuff at a base aperture of f/5.6 at 400mm! LOL

My (A700) settings for the air show are usually:
f/5.6
1/2000 second
ISO-400
Spot focus
Spot metering
AF-A DMF
DRO+5EV

And I wound up with this ... this year (after slight Photoshop detailing):

The Tamron 70-300 as the workhorse of the Alpha users! Scribblah i like the stacked shot where the old school prop fighter is "on top" of the others. Nice work Don on exposure cleaning.
