Does anyone know if the af beam/ red eye reduction lamp can be turned off?

This feature is very irratating. Especially when taking a photo relitivlly close to someone, the red flash is quite bright.

How about a small, neatly cut circular piece of black electrician's tape?

Thanks. I figured it out. The instructions are unclear, I finally found the option to turn it off in the very long list of settings on the camera.
