My S2 IS recently developed a strange problem. When I first turn it on, the lens extends and I can see all the info displayed in the viewfinder or the main screen. But the image is black in both viewers. If I press the shutter, it will take a picture, even set off the flash, but the picture will still be black.
Now, if I turn the camera off and then back on, it will work normally in every way. This has been going on for several weeks. I'm worried, of course, that eventually it will stop completely.
Any ideas?
how very strange
black screens can usually mean a failed shutter
you've said turning it off then on makes it better, which i can't explain
perhaps one day the shutter will fail completely

Apparently Canon had an ongoing problem with the CCD sensors on the S1 IS (which they rectified for no charge) and which may have carried through to some of the S2 IS's (their sensors could also be made by Sony I think).
Anyway... It would seem that this CCD defect issue is on the rise — according to other forums I've seen. It's becoming a more common issue with long-term S2 IS owners. If you send in your camera, with this completed form

to:
CANON FACTORY SERVICE CENTER
1440 CHASE AVENUE
Elk Grove Village, IL 60007
(630) 250-6500
... and briefly explain the situation and request a "courtesy repair" Canon will most likely replace the CCD free of charge. But don't hold me to it LOL.
Cheers :)
yea if it is a CCD
which does apply to the S2
canon will cover it
