I am looking to get a 3-way head for my tripod.

I would like one that will fit easily into my tripod case.

I also want smooth and stable adjustments.
I don't necessarily need ultra-fine control, though.

I would prefer to not spend more than $75 (shipped)

I have looked at some in the local camera store, but only liked one that they were selling for $169.... too high for me.

I also looked at a Manfrotto (not sure of the model)that cost about $50, but I was surprised how cheap it felt.
The handles locked securely, but when they were unlocked the pan/tilt movements were not smooth at all.
It actually felt loose and wobbly when it was unlocked.... Maybe it was just an abused floor-model.

I have been looking at the Giottos MH-5001 3-way Pan Head. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ANETW2/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&coliid=I7SUGJCKRNDK0&me=&seller=&colid=1UL4JGO297Q28) I like what I have been able to read about it, including the user reviews.

Is there another head that you might recommend?

So lets get this straight. You want a variable, compact, smooth action, cheap, but expensive feeling tripod head. You want to pay cheap you will get cheap unless you are lucky enough to buy used but not abused. A good tripod or head is something you buy once. Look for what fits your needs and stick with it. You get what you pay for. A good manfrotto is a good buy in my opinion. I plan to get one myself.

My 3D head is an independent (promaster?). It was $50 and is as solid as the rock of Gibralter.
