I have spent months reading and re-reading different peoples views on the best (sub $1000.00) digital camera for shooting macros. The only thing I could learn so far is that no 2 people can agree on the best camera to use.

I typically shoot jewelry-- http://www.abbottglassdesigns.com/gallery.asp -- and am looking to upgrade my camera (a Canon G2). I only intend to use this camera for macro jewelry shots so other capabilities are not needed.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what the best camera might be. And better yet, do you think I could get 2 people to agree that the same camera might be the best or atleast pretty good?

Thank you, thank you, and thank you!

Aaron-

No, you most probably won't get many folks to agree on which camera really does macro digital photos the best. However, you will get people to agree that Nikons do a good job with macro digital photos.

Here are a few digital cameras that I, personally, would look at rather closely:

Nikon CP 5400 (there is currently a $200+ rebate through 01/31)
Pentax 33WR or Pentax 43 WR (can focus down to 3/8")
Pentax MX$ (can focus at the lip of the lens mount)

Good Luck with your search. Your website looks good. I agree however, you could show a lot more detail if you were able to get closer to these small very intricate pieces of art.

Thank you for your input. I guess I am leaning towards some type of Nikon. There seems to be some agreement that Nikons in general are pretty good for macro shooting…now if we could only agree on which one.

I looked at the Nikon CP 5400, but then I ran across a couple of negative reviews of it by users: extreme wide-angle distortion at the closest focus ranges. This has me shying away from that one. But I also have read some great reviews of it. This probably would be my pick if it wasn’t for the bad reviews.

I have this fantasy about getting the Nikon CP 8800 but I’m not sure it’s worth the cost for strictly macro work. Or maybe the Nikon CP 8400.

Thanks!

I, personally, have not had a great deal of sucess with 8mp Nikon digital cameras. That is only my personal experience. I really liked the CP 5000 and the CP 5700.
