What is this feature called?

I've seen some Canon and Sony digital camera models shine an amber light on the subject when under very dark lighting conditions. I'd like to buy a camera with this feature but I'm not sure what to search for. Thanks.

That's the Auto-Focus Illuminator lamp, or AF Assist. It's a common feature these days, but some cameras don't have it. I agree with you that it is a required feature on a compact camera.

Thanks. I'm looking at the Sony DSC-T1 and the Canon SD300 which both seem to have.

Both nice cameras, I bought the SD300 because it really met my needs very well and had some features that I liked over the Sony (price, no Memory Stick, optical viewfinder, feel in hand) but I imagine both would work for you.
