View Full Version : taking pic's of the night sky??

Tonight i was outside getting out of the car and noticed how awesome the star's looked. so i went inside got out my camera (Kodak Easyshare Z712IS) and tried to snap a few shot's. but of course none of them turned out. so wanna know how to shoot pic's of the star's. preferable something that will comply with my camera's capabillities.

Tripod + long shutter speeds.

You do need a tripod. Use your widest view (zoom out as far as you can.) Focus on something very far away, like a hill or house on the horizon. Switch to manual focus and aim at the stars. Use your widest aperture (smallest number, like f/3.5,) your highest ISO (like 1600) and a shutter speed of around 15 seconds. You'll see a small amount of blur at that speed, which is actually motion blur from the movement of the earth. But the stars will pretty much look like points of light, the way we see them. I took this shot using the directions above. It was almost 2 years ago, maybe I'd be able to get better focus if I tried again :)
