Are they any good? I need one for work. I'm thinking about this one...

I've heard good things about their overall quality. Does anyone have any experience with the brand?

Based on CNet's reviews, it's an average mid range laptop.

I have a Toshiba laptop. Does it's job perfectly well. No complaints to make about it.

Okay, that laptop is too big for me so nevermind the link. I pretty much need a laptop that is built well and won't crack when I open it like my old Compaq. I'm using it in some rough conditions.... no I'm not going to buy a Panasonic toughbook.

Just get the cheapest Acer or whatever and use it until it breaks then buy another.

On second thoughts... The new Asus is neat - the one with the solid-state hard drive.

Well, I could buy an Acer for 400 (1GB Ram 120GB HD, AMD Processor 3600) or I could buy a Toshiba for $600 (3GB Ram, 250 GB HD,Intel Duo processor T5750) If the quality is better why would I waste my time with the Acer especially if I need the reliability at work.

Oh and I was thinking about a mini PC but they don't have the power to run the hardware I need it too.

Do you need 3D graphics capability?

worst laptop i ever owned. will never go back. it was an a100. slow, heated up VERY quickly which significantly degraded performance. the toshiba proprietry software preinstalled was also painful to use and almost impossible to completely eliminate.

i have an acer now and its absolutely fabulous.

Toshiba's not bad altogether... but they tend to be either outdated in their hardware options, or else overly expensive for what they offer.

My Dell D820 feels pretty well built considering it's not from the 80s. I've had it for nearly 2 years, shoving it in and yanking it out of my camera backpack pretty regularly. The Dell D series are business class and were designed for road warriors.

Well we picked up a Toshiba Satellite L300 lastnight before I saw Rooz's post! lol

We're in a bit of a hurry and it was the best available for the least amount of # at this time. We'll see how it goes.

Should be fine if you're not the abusive type.

95% of toshiba owners are pretty happy nick so am sure you'll be fine. i also think the performance of the intel chip was more the problem than the laptop per se.

I dunno, I posted the same question in an automotive technician forum and received a very similar response as you from a guy I trust. He named his Toshiba "Lucifer".

I'm sure every manufacturer has it's horror stories though.

You should be fine, we ahve a few Toshiba machines at my workplace and all have been very good. Best bang for the buck that I have found is the Gateway models though.

Only thing I can say on any brand laptop is if you need battery life, go with the Core2 Duo chip and not the Athlon X2 or Turion. The Intel chip sucks way less power. I am an AMD Fanboy but the Core2 is a hell of a chip for a laptop...

Owned a Tecra L2, it was the worst computer I have ever owned. After having the motherboard replaced thrice, My battery dying on me after a month, and the fact that I was constantly running the recovery disc because the damn xp pro I had was the worst copy ever made, I sold it. I will say it did still "function", but it wasn't quite like I was needing. But, with that said, that was only my experience, others may have had more luck. It was enough to sway me in directions other than Toshiba though, thats for sure.
