Budget

* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible.
Up to 400$ before taxes.

Size

* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?
The most compact possible. It needs to fit in my pocket, not using a bag.

Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you?
Megapixels doesn't matter.

* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x, Other - Specify)
Optical Zoom doesn't matter.

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)
8, especially good in low light.

Do you care for manual controls?
Would prefer to have them, but not necessary (unless you believe I should while understanding my usage).

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for?
I want to be able to use the camera for taking shots at nightclubs attendances where low light is usually surrounding the scenes. Indoor shooting also requires a wide angle to capture the widest scene. So the most important features therefore are good low light performance, wide zoom, good image stabilization and compact size, resulting in good image quality photos.

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?
No.

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?
Yes, a lot! May be 80% of the camera's use.

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?
Possibly, but improbable.

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate?
Doesn't apply.

Are there particular models you already have in mind?
Many Panasonic Lumix models offer 25mm and 28mm wide zoom (FX33, FX35, TZ5), which is decent. However, I do not know how these perform in low light conditions.

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)
Wide Angle of course, IS is a must also.

Maybe what I'm looking for may not exists, I know I ask much, but if this is the case, please recommend me which models best respond to my needs.

I've read that the Fujifilm F30, F31 and F40 and good in low light conditions, but 35mm doesn't appear as an option to me, I really want a wide angle to be available.

Thanks a lot!

If you can't use a flash regularly, your "dream" camera pretty well doesn't exist.

Thanks for the reply.

Of course I can use the flash, but it still needs to have a very good AF and not to be hunting for focus all the time, that is what I meant.

Would you have any suggestions then?

When people talk about low light they usually mean without flash. All cameras will do OK with flash, assuming the subject is in the flash range. All cameras will have some problems hunting for focus in the low light of a club even with a AF-illuminator.

Given your requirements, something like a Panasonic FX500, a Canon SD870 or a Sony W170 would do OK.

Perhaps add the Fujifilm f100fd to your list.

If you are looking for ultimate wide angle, look at the Panasonic fx35 (or new fx37) and the Samsung NV24HD. Those are the two widest compacts at the moment.

Thanks, I was not aware of that. Then I guess I must look for a camera that will satisfy the rest of my needs. I'll check it out.

Lots of good suggestions already. I would add the "old" Panasonic FX55.
