Lens Hood Question

I've been noticing, mostly news photographers, using a lens hood indoors and with a flash. I thought that the hood was for bright, glaring light, like you would get outside, to reduce lens flare. Is there some purpose for the lens hood inside?

It looks cool? I honestly have no idea and haven't really had much use of my hood yet.

A very strong indoor light source can also produce lens flare...but that's rare. Having one on when using flash can increase the chance of a shadow in the shot, depending on the position of the flash. But I would imagine that most shooters who use them indoors just leave the hood on for protection.

That's why I do it. Especially in crowds.

Protection, expecially when dropped. Better to explode a 25 dollar lens hood than a $1600 lens.

Also it makes you look cool. My HB-17 hood on the end of my 80-200 looks like its going to attack. I love it.

I use it for protection. It is on all of the time. Why? I can set the camera down, bump into something, whatever, and the lens never touches anything. Priceless.
