No P&S cameras in this price range are very good in low light. The Canon SD-series are no worse then the majority of small cameras, but there are a few better ones.
If you allow AA batteries (NiMH rechargeables are quite good) you get a few better options; mainly the Fuji F50 or F40/45 if you can still find them. The Canon A720 would be another choice (limited to 4G/38minutes of video).
For other LiIon battery models you could look at the Casio Z80, the Panasonic FS5 or the Sony W120, but none are going to be significantly better or worse at low light compared to the Canon SD1100.
can't you use flash? I know that is breaking a big photography law but if its just for happy snaps or general usage then there isn't really such a necessity
I would definitely recommend the A720

of course i can use flash but ive read that some cameras still arent good in lowlight even with the use of flash.
i was looking at this camera originally canon SD1100 and other cannons like SD870 so do you think one of those is a good choice or should i go for a sony

I prefer the Canons, but the Sonys are fine as well. The flashes on these cameras are just OK so they're fine for snapshots of friends. Learning how to set the ISO and White Balance yourself will go a long way to getting the most out of these cameras, but that will only get you so far.
I use my SD800 indoors when I need it and it works fine, but none of these cameras are really great in low light. If I could take shots without flash (like I could with a Fuji F30) they would be much better.
How do you plan on using the camera? If you just want to take pictures out for dinner and bars, etc, they'll all be fine. Just use the flash and keep people fairly close to you. If you want to take pictures of singers on stage at a concert, they'll all be equally poor.

There's a handy chart at the top of the review (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dsc_w150-review/) on this site.
The W150 has better wide angle and telephoto, at the cost of a slightly slower lens. It has a much better LCD. It has better electronics and better battery life. It costs $50 more.

Correction: the Fuji F40fd and F45fd use ion rechargeable batts, not AA.
As for the Sony W150, their W130 has a faster lens and a lower price. Have g/f play with both the Canon SD1100 and Sony W130 in the store. Ask her to pick the one she is comfortable with.

They're all pretty good cameras. You've got one (pink? nice...) so don't look back. Enjoy it, she'll take lots of pictures and you'll both be happy.
