I don't believe Opteka are well regarded. I'd avoid them.

Hi there Karen...

Yep, I'd be interested in a bit more feedback about Opteka from other members as well, 'cos I was considering buying this 58mm polariser from them — as it's half the price of a Hoya.

Opteka (http://www.opteka.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=86)

Their site looks pretty legitimate (but... don't they all LOL) and they make a big deal about keeping their consumer costs down. I guess for $29 you could always give it a go; even if their macro lens turns out to be a load of rubbish, it hasn't broken the bank — and you might just (possibly!) grab a bargain.

Cheers :)

From what I've heard on these forums in the past their conversion lenses are the rough equivalent of putting a bit of dirty glass infront of your camera lens. :p Very cheap glass is nearly always more expensive - You just have to buy the better version a bit later when you realise you wasted your money! ;)

Also, can you trust a company that makes This? (http://www.opteka.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=50) And the bit about the 'X-ray' infrared filter at the base of that page...Someone needs to tell these people those are at distinctly different ends of the electromagnetic spectrum! (Have a link to that filter...The description page makes me chuckle. Clicky here (http://www.opteka.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=95)).

Hehe...

They're exactly the sort of lenses I always wanted as a prepubescent 11-year-old boy! :D

Why, oh why weren't they around then?

Opteka is best known for making those magnetic telephoto and wide angle lenses that you can pretty well stick on any point and shoot to modify the optics, but they do make screw-in lenses and filters as well.

You're not going to great results out of them by any means, but they're great fun to play around with. I mean, I got my mom a 2x telephoto adaptor from Opteka from Wal-Mart for $5.00 and she loves it.

If your expectations are set appropriately, they can be decent lenses. You won't get high end SLR optics quality, but you'll be able to take fun shots you couldn't do before. A fisheye lens for an SLR is $300+, so you can't ask pro quality out of a $30 lens.

If you want the best quality, Sony makes some conversion lenses, which are mentioned in the review from this site:
