Nice....lots of running around I suppose!!!!
I like #4 the most....
Seems like a lot of direct flash for these shots...the shadows seem a little harsh in some of them!!!

Yeah I was kickin' a direct flash from the right rear corner and a barely-bounced one from the far left. Trying something different for a change.

yes it does look very different from your other shots and to be honest I don't like these one as much as the others.....these look like something I would take with direct flash to make sure I don't underexpose... :o

Yeah in hindsight I need to snoot my backlighting flash. I forgot how wide the 35mm beam really is, and as a result got lots of spill creating harsh shadows. Ultimately I want to run 6 lights at a time (four bouncing and 2 direct), but I don't have enough receivers yet. Later on in the evening I added on-camera ceiling bounce from my 580EX II with a bounce card with good results. It's what I should have been doing all night.

Having said that, I don't aim to make every shot soft & sweet. I intend to experiment as much as possible. Typical on-camera bounce flash wouldn't have been flattering for the dance anyway since the ceiling was too low.

hmm...so including the two direct flash you added the 580EX to get the above...right???
If so....it does look much better!!!!
Hmm...Curious, Wouldn't a diffuser help in a situation when the ceiling is too low and direct flash is needed??

Yep. It's the two strobes as normal, with a smaller aperture to harness them a little more, and my on-camera 580EX bounced with a catchlight card to illuminate the girls. At first I was trying to go light-weight and just have my camera and the trigger on top, but the results were ugly so I mounted the flash and hooked the trigger to my camera's PC port.

A diffuser would have simply reduced the power of my flash, causing slower recycle times and shorter overall duration from my batteries. A Sto-fen might have slung the light around a little extra to fill the immediate areas around the flashes, but that's not what I needed. The room was really just too long and too low ceilinged to get the results I needed the logical way.

Nice Don. I almost always use a bit of fill from my on camera flash these days when I am shooting off camera lights. I use the off camera lights to open up the background and the on camera flash to add a little fill. I typically use a flip-it on the on-camera flash.

Thanks Jamie. That's what I did later on. I didn't think to snoot my strobe for the backlighting, thus the nasty shadows on everything else. Obviously need to fine tune my lighting, but this was only my 2nd time out with using more than one light so I'm not completely disappointed in myself. My "flip-it" was the velcro card I handed to you back at Martha-Ellen & Daniel's wedding. Still works pretty well, IMHO. :D

off camera flash is soooo tricky in uncontrolled situations like wedding receptions. i shot a wedding saturday which i'll be posting here in a little bit after i pick out some favorites...anyway, got ONE picture i was happy with...the rest were just sloppy. i think...for me...rimlight is good for direct flash, but i'll probably be using bounce for the rest from now on. how do y'all use on camera flash and wireless triggers? what do y'all use?

Yeah I got a little trigger happy with the rimlight stuff. I bounced my main light, but barely. I think the fact that my rimlight had a 35mm angle of coverage made it look like crap. I may use the 5600 instead for that since I can zoom the head to 105mm.
As for triggering, I plugged the Skyport into the PC port of my flash and velcroed it to the flash head. I didn't use my bracket this time, but next time I will & the Skyport will be velcroed to the OC-E3 on the body's hot shoe so that it's stationary.
