Smells fishy but I want it! :(
Umm.... "WENT OUT OF BUSINESS/DECLARED BANKRUPTCY."... Which was it - did the shop go bankrupt or did it go out of business. If it was the former then the auditor would have called in the receivers who would have sold the camera at auction. If the owner was going out of business then he'd sell everything at full price until he had almost no stock left and would then sell the rest to loyal customers. I don't believe a word of this very fishy advert. Suggest you meet him to do the deal at your local police station for the safety of both of you and see what he says :p

That's one heck of a steal if it is true though. Good luck. I just acquired my 1D mkIIn today for 2000 USD

Oh Nick ... I had one of these in my hand, Two days ago ... with your favorite lens on the front of it, the EF 85mm (yep) f/1.2L USM II.
$10,000 worth of photographic equipment ... one-handed. The salesguy nervously handed it over to me ... and he just shuddered as I gave it the once over.
I just calmly handed back, when I was finished and asked (what else?): "Got anything in a ... SONY?"
LOL ... man, you really have to love this stuff.
EDIT: Sorry., I goofed ... it was the EOS 1Ds Mk III, not the 1D. Oh well ...

Be careful Nick. There have been many reported camera sale scams on Craigslist over the past year. There was one in my area for a 5D/16-35 II for $2000 about 6 months ago. I did buy my 50 1.4 off of Craigslist though - I met the guy in person at a shopping mall.
lol..whadda you reckon Nick ?
I'd suggest meeting at the local police station to do the deal :p
If he objects then there's something wrong with the deal :D

I reckon the guy is full of it. I still emailed him though. :o
The 1Ds look legit though. Too bad I don't have that kind of cash! :D

yea, the guy's actually overseas, but just needs you to wire him money for 1/4 of it and you can go get it from the garage it's sitting in...probably the next town over.
The internet's full of these guys. Remember the one a few weeks ago that wanted photography for his bosses daughter's wedding and who wanted to send a check via DHL? He vanished when I told him I was too busy to wait for DHL and to send a check via USPS instead.

I've brought myself back down to earth and I'm currently bidding on a 20D. Wish me luck! :D It's my first time on ebay. I hope I don't get screwed. :(

as long as you order from folks that don't mind shipping to canada and they have good feedback with more than say 15 and have bee on there for over a year you're golden. my original 30d came from ebay and my 24-70 i owned was an ebay lens too.
what you have to watch out for are the 10-20 feedback people that have been on there for a week.

one time a "friend" of mine, another photographer, told me he was kicked off ebay for not listing his prints right. he sold nudes on ebay. so he made a new account and told me he needed feedback to get other people to buy his stuff. so i "buy" a print from him and we both leave each other good feedback, he does the same with a couple of other "friends" of his. little did i know he was screwing people and not sending his prints...and that's why he was kicked off the first time. so like i said, be wary of low feedback numbers. the positive feedbacks mighta been tricked like i was into helping them look better.

If the ebay bid doesn't work out for you, take a browse through http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=14
And on ebay be careful not to get caught up in a last minute bidding war and bid more than the camera is worth !!! You see that alot there.

Ya, I've got my max bid set and if someone goes over that..... oh well.
I think I would rather buy locally then off of POTN. Unless I knew the seller.

Usually the only stuff I buy off Ebay is CF cards and stuff that I can use the "Buy it Now" option. I've always gotten screwed in the autions; items often seem to sell for more than they are worth!
I've bought most of my stuff off of POTN and FM without ever having an issue - most people on FM especially seem legit. Much more trustworthy than Ebay, IMO. I like FM best, especially now with the new "rating system" of Buyers/sellers - have you checked this out recently?

As well there is a feedback rating system on POTN, although you have to do a search for a particular seller. I did by a lens off POTN and was very satified with the transaction.

Nick, in another thread you kind of hinted you were reluctant to buy from a USA dealer. How so? Customs or something else? Probably shipping may be a bit more.

I tried to sign up for FM but I didn't have a valid email address... well I did but I typed .ca instead of .com after my email address and now it won't let me register again... I'll have to message an admin there to get going.

Hey thanks for that link.
I find the shipping costs vary too much from shipment to shipment. Sometimes I'll get dinged for tax other times I won't (used stuff), sometimes I'll get charged duty fees other times I won't, It almost always gets stuck at the boarder for extended periods of time. Add on top of that the confusion with warranty issues and return polices.
I'll buy from across the boarder but it's gotta be a really good deal to make it worth while for me. I'm sure an experienced buyer knows all the loop holes and stuff but I don't so it more appealing to buy Canadian.

.
I'm aware of POTN's FB thread. The nice thing about FM now is that when you go to the Buy/Sell forum right next to the sellers name is a Great/Fair/Poor column with the # of each type of FB they have recieved; that way you can easily get an idea of how much and what type of FB they have w/o searching through posts on a thread. Its very nice.
