:)When I upgraded to VISTA my HP 4570c Scanjet failed to work. In an artist magazine I came across software called Vue Scan. Their web site www.hamrick.com allows you to check if your scanner is supported. You can then down load a demo version to check it out at no cost. The cost for the program is $40. My scanner is working again. It sure beats buying a new scanner.

You can also check your scanner company page for updated drivers, which are normally free.

My Epson Photo scanner software won't re-load anymore - some impossible loop occurs right near the end (long story) so I downloaded Vuescan.
I have to say it was a bit less easy to use - and with negatives it is slower - but it is more manipulatable and more accurate. swings and roundabouts I guess - but it i great when it comes to odd sized old negatives as I can select around them which I couldn't do with the Epson software.
So - I recomend it, so long as you arn't in a tearing hurry
