Good stuff Nick! I like 3 and 4 the most. You captured some emotion with them.

Nick, you are shooting with it ... is it delivering what YOU expected?

Very nice shots Nick it looks like a good concert lens, I liked the last shot & then I noticed it was at 3200iso so it's a very impressive low noise image. That Canon really is a low noise beauty or you did some pretty smart PP or perhaps a bit of both?

thanks! It wasn't hard to catch emotion when shooting the fella in #3,4,5 He was wearing his hart on his sleeve. great performance! His name is Charles Walker. He was singing "Summertime" (http://www.geocities.com/martynb88/summertime.html) when I took the pictures.
Is it delivering what I expected/what I want? I haven't shot with it too much yet but my initial observations.
Optical quality is great.
100% crop default sharpening in lightroom, no other adjustments.

AF is probably the "worst" out of the lenses I own. It's great don't get me wrong but I think the 35 and the 85 are faster, with the 35mm being the fastest. Maybe that has something to do with the FL?
It's the best built lens I own, or at least it feels the best. It smokes my 35mm in build quality. It's a nice size and weight too. I carried it around with me during my shifts at the bluesfest, speed walking around the park doing errands etc. for 5 hours and didn't have a problem at all. I LOVE that it is black. I know that might sound silly but I feel like I draw less attention.
The 2.8 aperture hasn't been as big of a problem as I thought it might be. Because it's such a long FL It's really best used outdoors. I don't mind bumping up ISO so it hasn't been a problem.
I'm still getting used to seeing things at 200mm. I still don't have that feeling of knowing what I'm going to see when I put the camera up to my eye as I do with my other lenses. It's quite the challenge to see good compositions with that condensed of a FOV.
So overall I think it's a good purchase for me and will most likely make me a more rounded photographer.
As far as low noise at ISO 3200. I don't really have an explanation. The shot is straight out of lightroom with no special attention given to noise. that shot is cropped quite a bit too. I don't bother with noise reduction most of the time. In fact I haven't really spent much time at all in PP with any photos lately. If there is a shot I don't like I'll just skip it and move to a better file instead of trying to make it work with extra PP.
#1,3,4,5 are right out of the camera with no cropping or anything.

too late nick. it's happened. good to hear though. nothing like someone's experience instead of charts to let you know how a lens really is.

#4 is one fine shot. I can almost feel the emotion from his vocals. Stick that one in your portfolio sir! Only nit is you need to clone that small white spot from the bottom left. I like #2 as well.

LOl I don't think it's happened quite yet. I still don't know how to read an MTF chart. :p
