I don't know what to call it. But look at K1W1's (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3131/2597144742_9560eb2319_b.jpg) shots (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2292/2541228746_b7fa572278_b.jpg), and take a look at this example (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarahgardnerphotography/2472985703/), and then look at mine (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=35296&d=1209047826). Notice how the others had a shine, a glow somehow in the skin tones, and mine didn't?

How do you get that? Is it lighting, lens, a combination of the two?

I don't know, choose a pastier subject? :p The flickr one looks like the exposure and contrast are bumped some. Maybe it's just the little kid skin.

I noticed the same luminous effect in K1W1's recent shot (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showpost.php?p=312210&postcount=5683) of middle-aged men :) Hmm, not many replies, maybe my inquiry doesn't make much sense? Thanks for chiming in, Lukas.

It must be the lighting and the subjects actual skin tone.

From what I can see lighting is a big factor in these examples you posted. In his shots the sun is behind a cloud, look at the nice soft shadows under and on people. Your shot is with the sun not behind a cloud, thus making it a harder non diffused light source. Clouds make a beautiful diffuser ie. large soft light.

I waited to see if it was just me. I actually like the skin tones on your photo more than the rest of the examples you posted. I can't help here. Lighting certainly makes a lot of difference in a lot of shots.

I think you are comparing apples to oranges.
The girl on the grass is almost a studio setup. Your's is an as is action shot. Totally different. Do you really think that photo of the little girl was a grab shot?
Let it go.
