Looked everywhere online, and quite a few people have a problem with this, with very inconsistent resolutions.

Basically when I plug my SD1000 into my laptop or my deskop, they both give an error stating it's failed to instal lthe driver for my "Digital Still Cam". However my dad's Vista machine works with my camera flawlessly. All machines are running Home Ultimate.

I've tried deleting this random INFCACHE file, to no avail.

Anyone with experience in this?

Thanks,
Ming

There could be many reasons; all of which are fairly hard to diagnose over the Web. A simple solution would be to buy a $10 USB card reader and use that. It's almost guaranteed to work properly.

There you find one reason why Vista is so incredibly unpopular.

Did you get any CD with drivers for the camera? If so, did you install the drivers (and maybe other utility programs) on your computer(s)? If you didn't, it's worth trying. :)

My Vista system works perfectly when detecting new hardware, including several digital cameras. However, I generally just plug the SDHC card into the computer and go from there flawlessly.

Are you running Vista SP1? If not, upgrade now - Its free. Have you checked Canon's website for a driver?

Have you ever used Vista on a newer machine? It is actually pretty nice. After a month of usage, it is by far my favorite version of windows and my XP machine at work feels like a Windows 95 dinosaur. I find most people who bash vista have never even used it, or tried to install it on a 5 year old machine with no RAM. When XP was new, there were driver issues for that as well, it just happens when a new version of an OS comes out.

Yes. I have tried Vista on new machines. I disliked it intensely. My sister-in-law has a laptop with Vista as does my niece. Both have horrendous problems with Vista.

Xp's not that great either - my wife's laptop lost her user account a few days ago although I rescued the data.

I went for OSX and I notice how much better it works than my XP laptop.

I've been running Vista for over a year. I have no problems.

Do you have more than one USB connection setting in the camera if so switch to other option. On the Vista machine under Universal Serial Bus Controllers check and see if you have a enhanced controller listed if not update one of the standard controllers.

I've been using Vista on a brand new box with 4GB RAM for a couple of weeks, and have just given it the flick and reloaded XP. Far too many incompatibilities with drivers etc. Also, Vista is a horribly (and needlessly) bloated OS in my humble opinion.

My advice would be to wait for Win7 and jump Vista altogether.

Cheers :)
