Let me just clarify, I'm not trying to sell here (in case that breaks any forum rules). I'm just looking for help in determining a price.

I'm looking to sell my Canon Digital Rebel XT 8-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera w/18-55mm Lens. I also want to sell the following as a package deal: a Canon Speedlite 430EX Flash, a SanDisk Ultra II CompactFlash 2GB Memory Card and a Sunpak PicturesPlus 58mm Circular Polarizer Filter. The camera is 1.5 years old, in mint condition with approx. 2800 pictures taken. I have the original box, paperwork and software cd's.

We spent approx. $1000 when we originally bought this setup but the going rate now is approx. $900.

I have a possible buyer but am clueless as to what a fair price would be. Anyone have any suggestions on what $$$ to sell for??

I would appreciate any help. Thank you

The only help I can offer is that searching recently completed listings on Ebay or looking at the sell section of FM (Fred Miranda) or POTN (Photography on the Net) to see what pricing is like would be the best way to start. Good luck.

Camera/lens: New $450.
Flash: new $235
Card and filter ...say $40.

$725 total, new.

Ask $550, take $500 for used?

You might be better off donating it and taking it as a deduction.

Camera + lens + memory would make a good package. I'm thinking $300 - $350 for the lot.

I think you should offer the flash at 85% of full value with a $15 discount if purchased with the camera package (to cover shipping savings).

Many buying a used XT probably won't be the external-flash types, although I could see a beginning wedding shooter getting the set-up as their backup gear. Many-a-wedding was shot with the XT.

Thats a terrible resale price compared to the initial purchase price are you sure it's not pessimistic? I don't know differently I'm just asking.

From memory when I was looking recently for my camera I couldn't find the model I wanted (2 years old and superseded by a new model) for less than 80% of the new price. It made me really question the validity of buying second hand.

I checked ebay and $400 seems the price for an XT. I saw one going for $360. Even at B&H the price for a new XT is only $410.

Rebel XT bodies are entry level and have been superceded twice over (XTi then XSi). That means they aren't worth a hoot.

The kit lens doesn't add much value because it's a kit lens.

Camera memory is cheap. That's a gimme. Makes the package look complete but doesn't add value in and of itself. That's to say, take the memory out of the "kit" and you could sell it for the same price.

Sunpak filters are junk. Another gimme.

The flash you could probably get $200 for if you eat shipping costs (USPS Priority would be about 10 bucks or so, insured).

Not sure where you got the $900 "going rate" from because that's inflated...a lot.

Take awesome pics of each item. Sell the 430EX separately on POTN (they have free "classifieds" for Canon kit...the flash will sell fast if you price it fair and accept PayPal) then auction the rest on eBay. Be thankful if you get $350 for the XT and jump for joy at anything more.

Sell the stuff together and you'd net even less...if you even sell it at all. Not many people would want it all at once and fewer still would buy an XT to get the 430EX. Selling the 430EX on its own means you can target people who already have a camera body and now want to buy their first flash....or those who have multiple flash setups and want to add another...or begin a multiple flash setup...or have a backup.

The good thing about the XT is without the battery grip, it's a compact dSLR that can be slipped into a pocket easily as a backup for the main dSLR at an event.

I've got a Newswear Chestvest...but I won't waste a pocket on a Rebel. I have more important things to put in 'em. For example - my Little Black Book for Bridesmaid Phone Numbers. ;)

My wife disapproved of my little red book so it's now in a display case, hanging on the wall :D None of the numbers are probably any good any more anyway. Most of the girls I used to know have since got married. Actually, my little black book was originally a little black book but became a little red book which I replaced it with when the black one wore out from use :p

Here (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=sort&A=search&Q=&sortDrop=Price%3A+Low+to+High&bl=&atl=Brand_Canon&pn=1&st=categoryNavigation&mnp=0.0&mxp=0.0&sv=6222&shs=&ac=&fi=all&pn=1&ci=6222&cmpsrch=&cltp=&clsgr=) is the exact same kit new on a respected site for $450 ... NEW!
I get CF cards at MicroTimes for about $18 per 2GB card.

The updated (XTi) is $150 more ($550 body only). The XSi or 30D another $250 ($800 body only). You have to step up to the much touted 40D to pay $940 (body only).

Good Lenses tend to be 80-90% of new price, even years later (that is, current new price, not the original). That particular kit lens is known as a junker and is generally worth about $40-50 used. Cameras are very different in that the prices plumet - because they're basically computers in a box.

Interestingly; a guy on FM was Spring Cleaning. He listed his "stuff" then listed an original Rebel in the "Free if you want shipping" section.

That sounds more like what I was expecting. I wasn't disputing the second hand sell price so much as the ratio between "buy now new" and "second hand". Not much difference really why buy 2nd hand?
