Nikon 8800 owners...

Would appreciate some help in understanding and picking out filter lenses. I'm getting slightly confused and frustrated over trying to make a purchase of a UV and polarizer.

Seems that no camera shops near me know what size filter I need. Nikon isn't (or I can't find) the size on their web-site. EBay has filters for sale, but also comes with a filter adaptor. I want filters that are a direct fix to the lens. I have no desire; unless it the only choice, to add an adaptor and then the filter to the camera.

Before it turns into a conversation in the post, I don't want to edit the pictures on the computer. Some things are best with a polarizer on the camera.

Would appreciate any input!

Hi kornhauser

The three filters made for the 8800 are dedicated... ie they are a weird size and will only fit the 8800.

No other filter will fit without an adapter.

The dedicated filters are now available in the US but not in the UK yet.

I bought a Nextphoto Coolfix 58mm adapter so can now use any 58mm Nikon Filter, lens hood and lens cap. This works fine with no problems.

I'm wanting the dedicated filters. Any idea who will be selling them or are they a Nikon monopoly product? You have any idea the mm size?

You might want to check with B&H Photo. Also I've found that some of the larger (not mall based) Wolf and Ritz stores carry a decent stock, or can/will order Nikon peripherals fairly quickly.

I'll check. However, I did break down and buy a 58mm adapter tube for the Nikon. I found one in black, while most adapter rings are silver. Not my first choice, but I found Nikon dedicated filters were running around $65 to $75 bucks. Way too much. With this adapter ring I can add my Cokin filters and a polarizer.

I did check with Ritz. Nothing yet from them.

Thanks for your help! :)

These guys seem to offer several solutions:

I appreciate that, but as impatient as I am, bought an adapter tube for the 8800 to put generic 58mm filters. It's working fine and at half the price! :o

Hi Kornhauser,

What exactly is the adapter tube you purchased for the coolpix 8800?

I mean, what brand and model name?

What size of generic filters were you able to attach on your coolpix 8800 after the purchase?

I also have a coolpix 8800 and have the same problem. Besides filters, I was also wondering how I could attach generic wide angle and telephoto converters to the coolpix 8800.

I might (I am) be a litle off topic, Im sorry, but some of you in this topic seam to know a litle about filter size - and nikon 8800.

Im interested in knowing the size of the rear thread of the Nikon Teleconverter TC-E17ED adaptor lens - any chance one of you know this ?
if you have a UR-E19 / UR-E17, the thread should be the same size, as it is the camara adpator the teleconverte fit into.
can it be, that the size is 60mm - I've looked and looked all over internet, but diden't find a answer

The reasoon for asking is, I would like to know if this (on paper) good TC might fit other cameras as well.

Well, if my memory is not defected (lol), 8800 filter thread is 53.5mm or somewhat xx.5mm. That's why you cannot fit any other filters on 8800.

I would recommend HN CP-14 Lense Hood. It comes with 67mm filter adapter. The hood is not so pricey, so this is a good way to go.

However, the hood and the filter adapter block the internal flash (unfortunately). If flash blockage is concerned, go for NextPhoto stuff. I recommend 58mm.

I have both hood and NextPhoto, but I usually use hood. Because I have an external flash, flash blockage is not my problem. Also the hood shares the same filter size (67mm) as my D70 18-70mm.

Adapter tube does not work well. If you have other choice, don't go for the tube.

thank for taking your time to answer, sadly that wasen't right what I was looking for - you see the TC-E17ED require a adaptor, before connecting to the camera (UR-E17 or UR-E19) so I asume that the rear tread size of the TC-E17ED will have to fit these adaptors and not the camera it self.

anyway, to awoid "off topic" I have started this new topic

witch only deal with my question

once again thanks

It's a generic made looking two piece tube out of China. I accidentally bid and won two of them on eBay. Couldn't be happier! Takes the odd size Nikon ??mm tube to a 58mm. Much easier to buy filters! That and these tubes are black. Look much better than the silver colored knock off's floating around.

Nikon says "approximate diameter 62.5mm" in the 8800 specs. I just IM'd a Nikon rep I know, he said the filters are proprietary size, nothing on Tifffen or Hoya yet. The Polarizer retails for about $75.00.

My local camera shop said to watch out going from the 8800's 62.5mm size down to 58mm by using an adapter. Going up with the nikon lens hood and using the ring would be no problem, but I was discouraged against going the other route. Can anyone else confirm that this poses no problem and that no part of a picture is blocked at all zoom levels.

The camera shop was probably giving you good advice, my coolpix 5400 uses 77mm filters to handle the shortest focal length of the lens without the filter interfering with the image area, 'vignette'. I usually go up not down in filter sizes using adapter rings. I use an external flash rather than the built in flash. The external flash gives better coverage and can be bounced for better results.
